Plot: Three women, separated by a span of nearly 80 years, find themselves weathering similar crises, all linked by a single work of literature in this film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Michael Cunningham. In 1923, Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) is attempting to start work on her novel {-Mrs. Dalloway}, in which she chronicles one day in the life of a troubled woman. But Virginia has demons of her own, and she struggles to overcome the depression and suicidal impulses that have followed her throughout her life, as her husband Leonard (Stephen Dillane) ineffectually tries to help. In 1951, Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) is a housewife living in suburban Los Angeles, where she looks after her son Richie (Jack Rovello) and husband Dan (John C. Reilly). Laura is also an avid reader who is currently making her way through {-Mrs. Dalloway}. The farther she gets into the novel, the more Laura discovers that it reflects a dissatisfaction she feels in her own life, and she finds herself pondering the notion of leaving her life behind. Finally, in 2000, Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Streep) is a literary editor who is caring for Richard Brown (Ed Harris), a former boyfriend and noted author, who is slowly losing his fight with AIDS. Clarissa is trying to arrange a party to celebrate the fact that Richard has won a prestigious literary award, but is getting little help from Richard's ex-lover, Louis (Jeff Daniels). As she labors to help Richard through another day, he wonders if his life is worth the unending struggle. The Hours also features Toni Collette, Miranda Richardson, Allison Janney, and Claire Danes. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Great Acting/complicated plot

Having seen this a number of years ago when I was unable to focus on the movie (because a friend who was with me talked and asked many questions), this has been an interesting look into a classic story of mental illness. This was actually the first time I really watched the movie.

The cast is awesome, but on top of that they individually outdid themselves in their role. It is more than worth viewing, but be prepared that it is depressing.

Too Darn Depressing for Me
Added 10/18/2009

The acting was too well done. All three leading ladies range from somewhat disatisfied to suicidally depressed and they were convincing. But here's the thing. Watching and listening to people who are depressed is DEPRESSING. And watching this movie was depressing. I watched for about an hour thinking it might pick up, that perhaps a real ray of sunshine would appear. But... I'm giving up. I will not put myself through watching the rest of it.

Having gone and read other reviews now, even some by people who liked the film, I don't think I missing anything. Whew.... I need to go watch Miracle or Rudy or Remember the Titans, SOMETHING inspirational to shake off this one.

Good movie - liked the way it was done.

This movie is so different. It is such a deep story line, where several lives tie in and different plots going on. I like the depth of it, and the way it was narrated some, and the characters are all good. It is a sad one and it makes you think about alot of things... great acting. You have to pay attention in this.

I like Meryl Streep's sunny character who is always busy planning parties & trying to make everybody's life better. She has a loving relationship with her partner ,Sally (played by the always wonderful Alison Janney) & her daughter,AJulia(claire daines). That was amazing how Meryl separated the egg yolks with just her fingers.
Virginia Woolf & Richard were difficult but interesting characters. Both are brilliant, albiet tortured geniuses that were irreversibly hurt by adults that they trusted.
It made me sad that the two of them had such a low opinion of themselves and felt they were ruining everyone around them. When in reality,so many people loved them ,warts and all.
What I couldn't get my head around was Laura's character. There is no explanation about anything this woman does. It just seems like she is in a hurry to get nowhere and doesn't care who she hurts in the process.I mean,at least give me the reason she wants to leave her husband.
Not trying to be judgemental but Laura made me sick.

Interesting retro drama

The Bottom Line:

If you're one of the people who hates when people portray the 1950's as a halcyon age where everyone skipped merrily along (as long as you were white!) grooving to rock and roll, watch Far From Heaven, a recreation of Douglas Sirk's style of filmmaking that follows a prototypical 50's housewife as she discovers that her husband has homosexual tendencies and that she's attracted to a black man; it may be a bit overpraised in some quarters but it's a fine film and a worthy watch.

Gay Spin & Propaganda against Blacks!!
Added 9/15/2009

This movie is nothing more than Hollywood spinning guilt on the Black population. It's dares to compare the discrimination Blacks face to that of Homosexuals. Homo's choose to have sex with same sex. Black have no choice in the color of their skin. So, Hollywood implies it's due to Christian faith. NOT! A terrible propaganda movie to throw Guilt upon the blacks for being a huge block of people who reject homosexuality. A slow- bad movie! Sad the discrimination of blacks and white relationships depicted, but not believable he would reject her either! Moore has no feelings when her Man goes Gay.into denial and just oh well acceptance. WOMAN DEPICTED AS STUPID! GAY is depicted as ok and as upper crust. While simply Being BLACK OR talking to a black for other than "house help or slave mentality" means he has to move out of town and you are ostracized and outcast! PURE PROPAGANDA!! APPEARS TO ATTEMPT TO ELEVATE HOMO'S ABOVE BLACKS!! BAD MOVIE, DON'T LET YOUR KIDS WATCH THIS AWFUL MOVIE!!

THESE 1-STAR REVIEWS ARE BEYOND THE PALE
Added 8/20/2009

RACISM and intolerance; that's all I see in these 1-star reviews. Of course no one will ADMIT to it, least of all to themselves. (Betcha can hardly wait to scream and yell and wave inane placards at your next Tea Party.)
FAR FROM HEAVEN is a beautifully crafted motion picture. If you grew up in the 50's and are objectively open-minded, you'll enjoy this stylish flick. Ignore the naysayers: their COMMENTS are boring and vacuous and without merit.
