Plot: Every junior-high geek's worst nightmare becomes a reality in this comedy. John Farley (Seann William Scott) grew up as a chubby kid with no athletic skills and poor self-esteem, and during his early teenage years his nemesis was Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton), his junior-high gym teacher, who took a sadistic glee in tormenting John and others like them. Years later, John has slimmed down, come to terms with his self-image, and become a best-selling author, publishing a self-help book on overcoming the specters of the past. John comes home to visit his widowed mother, Beverly (Susan Sarandon), and discovers she has a surprise for him -- she's getting married again, and her new fiancée is none other than Mr. Woodcock. Horrified, John is determined to keep Beverly from walking down the aisle with Woodcock, and along the way finds himself struggling to settle some old scores. Mr. Woodcock also stars Amy Poehler as John's publicist and Ethan Suplee as John's old friend Needleman. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

PRETTY BAD
Added 7/11/2009

I really like the actors in this movie. There are some big names. But the movie, the script itself, really is lacking. It seemed like quite a waste of all that talent. There were a few laugh out loud moments, but I stress a few. Mostly, the rivalry between the teacher and the student is just mean spirited. It gets to a point where it's not funny anymore. Much like Jim Carry's flop, The Cable Guy. That movie really wasn't funny because you just felt bad for the Matthew Broderick character. It went too far. Like watching a 1 1/2 hr hazing video. This movie has that same awkward feel. The movie is also very predictable. You can see where it's going well before it gets there. I don't know what else to say. Save your money and rent it before you buy it. You will probably not want to watch it again.

Let this Bomb Lie and Get the Original
Added 6/19/2008

This is a god-awful remake of a brilliantly funny British comedy from 1960 of the same name School for Scoundrels starring the hilariously subtle Alastair Simm as the professor. Simm as "Potter" guides his students through the art of "one-upsmanship" by subtly undermining them, making them ill at ease, and feeling inadequate while maintaining the demeanor and guise of being a perfect gentleman at all times. Billy Bob's mean, paint-balling, yelling jackass Bad Santa rehash just doesn't compare . . . Please, check out the original-- don't waste your time on this Dog!!!!!

whoever wrote this movie, needs to take Dr. P's class !

The concept has been rehashed, Anger Management and a bit of Fight Club references, with a little Hitch added to it.
But the story so silly and dumb, its a complete waste of Thornton's talent and its good that Ben Stiller's cameo appears to give this movie some needed lift.
Very Average movie, a rental at best (only if there's no other option)

Not bad

School For Scoundrels is no classic but in places it is absolutely hilarious. Jon Heder and Billy Bob Thornton hold the film together as the supporting cast don't really get too many decent lines (apart from the Moby lookalike). It's not that clever, but the humour is quite edgy and there are a few decent twists. Good Friday night entertainment.

Very Funny
Added 7/14/2009

I watched this with a couple of friends and we all thought it was a very good comedy. Not hilarious, but well worth watching, and one of the funnier movies I have seen. The actors are great and the story entertaining.

It deserves way higher ratings than the ones posted here.
