Plot: What can help one woman overcome the fears, anxieties, and traumas of a lifetime? Perhaps the music of Stevie Nicks? Gypsy (Sara Rue) is a woman in her mid-twenties who is still emotionally stuck in adolescence; her job (at a drive-through photo processing center) is nothing to write home about, and her one consuming interest in life is the music of Fleetwood Mac diva Stevie Nicks. Gypsy has gone beyond collecting Stevie's records, and loves to dress up like her idol, belting out her songs in living tribute. One of Gypsy's only friends is Clive (Kett Turton), a goofy goth kid still in his teens who enjoys hanging out in cemeteries, where he and Gypsy can sing their Fleetwood Mac favorites for preservation on Clive's camcorder. One day, while browsing the Internet, Clive discovers a website advertising a Night Of 1000 Stevies at a New York City nightclub, in which any Stevie Nicks imitator is welcome to take the stage in tribute. Clive is convinced this is an event Gypsy cannot miss, but it leaves them with only four days to get their act together and travel from Sandusky, OH, to the Big Apple. In addition, Gypsy has her own issues to deal with in New York, the city her mother ran off to when she abandoned her family many years ago. Gypsy 83, Todd Stephens' first feature after his breakthrough success Edge of Seventeen, premiered at the {~2001 L.A. Outfest}, a festival devoted to gay- and lesbian-themed films. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This Movie sucks
Added 5/24/2005

Now your problay wondering why i put 1 star on their
and the put "THIS MOVIE SUCKS".Well that's because
it has only 1 good scene in their that's when that kid
with the spikey red hair gets his revenge on the pedofile
security guard. This movie really has no plot,no story
they really don't tell what are the story behind these
5 troubled teenagers. And i think whoever made this movie
needs to go back to college because he has no idea how to make
a film in my opinon. And i would only reccomend this movie
to (...),lesbians,pedofiles,troubled teens,adults
or canadians

Good concept, good acting but, poor film.

This film could have been so much more than what it was. Though the acting was surprisingly good, it was way too slow for my tastes. The acting is why this movie got a 3 and not a 1...glad I rented instead of buying it.

Major props to the young actors.

More on aimless youth
Added 7/21/2003

Another entry in the aimless youth category, Rollercoaster is the story of five young teens, who break into a deserted amusement park. They walk around, drink booze, smoke pot, and are just generally upset with the world. However, two of these kids have an agenda. They plan to kill themselves at the end of the day, jumping from the top of a rollercoaster. What makes this movie so compelling to watch are the excellent performances from the entire cast, and the ending is quite startling. The actual DVD has no special features to speak of except being widescreen and you can watch the trailer. I would recommend this to anyone who likes (or is affected by) the films of Larry Clark (Kids or Bully). Watch out for the park security guard!

At first..skeptical...then....
Added 7/4/2009

I must say...I randomly picked up this DVD at Blockbuster because it was on sale and I no longer have cable in my new San Francisco apartment. At first it seemed a little cheesy and I was a little unsure of the acting....but after 20 minutes or so into the film I was HOOKED! The great music, the chemistry between the two leads, the scenery, the images and dialogue that reminded me of my past.....it was so identifiable. I absolutely loved Karen Black's character. Great voice, great acting. I wanted to see more of her in the film. She was so cool and mysterious. Gypsy's (Sarah) voice was amazing also. Not really much more I can say..very enjoyable. For anyone who "thinks out of the box" and does not conform to society....this is for you.

EXCELLENT film! Could watch it over and over!!!

I don't know what the reviewer "Gordon Larko" is smoking. For some reason, he feels compelled to leave the EXACT SAME horrible review and 1 STAR rating for all GAY-THEMED movies. Probably a "personal problem" of his. Hopefully this review will help correct this imbalance. I can't believe AMAZON is allowing this GAY BASHER to use their website as a venue to spread his hate.
By the way, This is an absolutely WONDERFUL movie!

The greatest film.. EVER!
Added 2/5/2009

Ok... I figured I should probably review this since it is my favourite movie of all time. No seriously, this is the best movie, ever. Let me just say, and not to sound big-headed, but I am a movie guru. Tons of horror, exploitation, action, drama... you name it. I actually discovered this gem from an ex-girlfriend of mine. I thank her from the bottom of my heart for this... Hell, I even have the movie poster for Gypsy 83 hanging above my computer. The acting is beyond amazing, the soundtrack is slamming and a must own as well, and the directing and emotion of this film never, ever loses it punch, no matter how many times you watch it. If you are looking for superior film making, look no further. Sara Rue is indescribable as Gypsy and Kett Turton plays the cutest gay goth boi ever. If this movie doesn't make you cry, call a morgue... cuz yer dead. Buy it, watch it, love it.

Amazing movie!
Added 7/10/2008

This is an amazing movie if your into the dark scene, or a little bi-curious. Gypsy and Clive are real true friends that would do anything for each other. With drama, comedy, and a little romance.... Its one great movie.
I just wish it ended different!
Make a sequeal!

You'll See Your Gypsy!
Added 1/18/2008

I was intrigued by this movie since the two protagonists (Gypsy and Clive/Robbie) hail from "small town" Sandusky, Ohio. I come from such a small Ohio town that Sandusky (home of the famed resort Cedar Point!) seemed a sophisticated metropolis to me growing up! Anyway this is an interesting film because of the performances of Sara Rue as twenty-five year old Stevie Nicks worshiping Gypsy and Kett Turton as her best friend high school senior and "goth" Clive. It's basically a road movie as the two who are considered more than a bit weird in their hometown set out from Sandusky to New York City to participate in a Stevie Nicks festival known as "Night of a 1,000 Stevies". While Rue and Turton's performances are strong this is a far from perfect movie. Gypsy's back story is well developed but I was confused by Clive's family life. The hitchhiking Amish farmer and the Ohio State fraternity boys in the camper Gypsy and Clive encounter seem contrived and unrealistic. Karen Black's performance as a failed lounge singer "Bambi" is good but I felt her part did little to move the story forward or give us insight that was not already obvious concerning Gypsy and Clive. And some of the scenes at the Pennsylvania rest stop made me blush so the movie is not for the prudish. The best part of the movie is the friendship between Gypsy and Clive and the movie is worth watching for anyone who wants a "coming of age" story that is quite a ways off the beaten path.
