Plot: In this comic send-up of dramas set in urban schools (such as Lean on Me and Dangerous Minds), Jon Lovitz plays Richard Clark, a teacher who is persuaded to give up his position at Wellington Academy, an upscale private school (where the receptionist cheerfully answers calls with the question Are you white?), to take over a class at Marion Barry High School in Inner City, U.S.A. Marion Barry High is a far cry from the ivory-tower atmosphere of Wellington; the statue in the courtyard holds a crack pipe, the Michigan Militia sets up a booth for career day, and there's so much violence on campus that the school has its own graveyard; however, Clark is determined to reach his thick-headed charges, and he hopes to also make an impression on Victoria Chappell (Tia Carrere), a beautiful woman also on the teaching staff. Clark does battle with Evelyn Doyle (Louise Fletcher), the school's militaristic principal, in an effort to raise standards for the school's star straight-C students, and he finds that he's getting through to one of the school's toughest students, Grig (Mekhi Phifer). Screenwriters Pat Proft and David Zucker helped create The Naked Gun and its follow-ups. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I could watch this movie a million times and it would still be equally funny as the first time I watched it. I don't know why someone would give this movie anything other then a 5. It is one of a kind, outrageous and hilarious all at the same time.

Silly, but funny

Certainly not a classic in film history, this film nonetheless is very humorous throughout in a very silly manner. From the folks who gave us "Airplane", sight gags are front and center and provide some nice time away from the reality that drains us all.

Exaggerated but very funny

I love this movie. As a high school teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District, I can say that much of the student behavior the movie portrays is greatly exaggerated, but that is strictly for humor. For example, the scene where Lovitz drives up in front of the school and a bomb explodes on the second floor and blows out several windows. I find that hilarious, but I doubt that ever occurred in a LAUSD school. Also, Lovitz's jacket completely covered with gum wads thrown by his students is over the top, BUT one semester I had to use a math teacher's room for one period, and I noticed that the top half of the wall in the front of the class was similarly coated with gum wads. I beleive the movie's purpose is to skewer the feel-good teen movies like "Stand and Deliver," which I also enjoy. If you enjoy high-school genre movies, I would also recommend "Lean on Me" (based on a true story), and Dangerous Minds.

Yes, it is true. Although Amazon.com advertised it as being in both formats, it is only in Full Screen format. I bought it and I have to return it now.
For who wants to know, Columbia House has it in both formats (it came out on the market a few years earlier and they still have it).
