Plot: This fourth trip down Freddy Lane was the most successful at the box-office, but although it has some impressive visuals, it is mostly an empty film. Credit must go to the effects team for some fine work, but otherwise, this entry from the director of Cutthroat Island (Renny Harlin) is extremely weak. Roland Kincaid falls asleep and awakens in the Springwood junkyard, where his dog -- named Jason in a sad foreshadowing of the film's giggly tone -- pees fire on Freddy's grave. The pyro-urinary baptism causes Krueger (Robert Englund) to reassemble from bones outward in an admittedly impressive sequence. Predictably, Freddy guts Kincaid, then appears in Joey's waterbed as a naked pinup girl (Hope-Marie Carlton) before slicing him to ribbons. And so it goes. The film has a few interesting ideas kicking around, but no real identification points. This is a video game, not a movie, and the characters seem to exist only in order to move the film from one effects sequence to another. There is a lot to be said for special effects, and the ones here are extraordinary and vivid. However, the wonderfully grim mood and subtle performances of Chuck Russell's outstanding third entry in the series are gone, abandoned by Harlin in favor of a splashy, comic book approach which would, unfortunately, dominate the series' later installments. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Not as perfect as 1 & 3 but still very good and entertaining!
Added 10/3/2009

The Dream Master was the last enjoyable and entertaining Freddy film unless you liked New Nightmare which did something different with the character and story. Nightmare 4 (directed by Renny Harlin who would go on to direct the awesome action flick with his then wife Geena Davis, The Long Kiss Goodnight) has fun, memorable dream sequences, good actors/characters and a good story. After picking off the remaining Elm Street kids from part 3, Freddy is looking for more kids to kill so he can take their souls and gain more power. Kristen from part 3 passes her special gift onto friend Alice who Freddy uses to reach the new bunch of teenagers. All in all, this installment was very well done. It's certainly much better than part 2, 5 and 6, but not as great as part 1 & 3. This is a neat follow-up to the Dream Warriors and deserves to be in any horror fans collection. A lot of people do not like the comical side of Freddy. While it lacks the darkness and scariness of the original, take it as a fun thrill ride that provides plenty of entertainment and you won't be disappointed!

I am reviewing the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series, but not this DVD release. I own the box set and I wanted to do individual reviews for each film.

By now the "Nightmare" franchise is replacing scares for laughs, but it does deliver some good FX moments. Robert Englund has played the character so many times he can do it in his sleep! The DVD transfer is very good on this entry and the disc has some cool goodies to check out.

Freddy''s Funniest Film

This doesn't have the well-known cast of the previous Nightmare 3 movie but the special effects are still good.....each very different and some of them very funny. They make this perhaps the most entertaining entry in the series.

I mean, where else can you see terrfied faces on pepperoni slices (on a pizza)?!

The storyline, however, features its usual dumb and ridiculous theology and has its usual share of unlikable obnoxious teens. Their parents weren't pictured as any better, perhaps worse. In fact, the kids and parents are so bad you wind up rooting for Freddy to do them in.

Perhaps that's the idea!

Wow, I was very impressed with this entry into the series. I thought it might be tame in the gore department considering it only rated 15 (the previous three movies were all rated 18) but it's actually just as gorey as the first three movies - if not more so.

The Nightmare On Elm Street series just keeps gettin beter and better, this movie was very suspencefull and gorey and the deaths - in usual Freddy style - were inventive. I think that this is the scariest of the four movies that I've seen. There are a few funny parts in the movie as it is partly a black comedy but it still manages to be suspenceful and scary.
