Plot: In this comedy drama, Spike Fumo (Sasha Mitchell) is a Brooklyn streetfighter with pugilistic aspirations. With Spike's mafioso father in Sing Sing, mobster and former fighter Baldo Cacetti (Ernest Borgnine) looks out for Spike by getting him some bouts and every once in a while convincing the fighter to throw a match. When Spike meets and falls for Baldo's daughter Angel (Maria Patillo), Baldo suddenly sours on Spike. The father wants Angel to marry the college-bound son of a cocaine-snorting congresswoman (Sylvia Miles), and Baldo only envisions Spikes' future as being a mob enforcer. Eventually, Spike moves away from his embittered lesbian mother (Geraldine Smith) and moves in with the Puerto Rican boxer Bandana (Rick Aviles). He soon has two women pregnant in two different neighborhoods as he contemplates his future. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

I heard of this movie in 1988 I didn't see it, when I saw a list of movies of the 1980's that wasn't transfered to dvd I brought the vhs tape to see it for myself. I know the film suppose to be a comedy but I didn't really laugh at. I didn't like how the puerto ricans was presented they didn't have any pride in themselves they believed in the italians like their gods who was coming to save them from drug dealers I just think it wasn't funny as a black person watching this film.

Filmed in my area

I just recently saw this movie and I love it. Several scenes were filmed in my neighborhood (Williamsburg and Greenpoint sections of Brooklyn). I was too young back then when the scenes were filmed. I think Spike is hot-looking.

This film is one of the best; it was low-budget and tries to live up to that. I first heard of it in "Iterview", I think, probably in an advertisement; Sylvia Miles is spectacular, and Spike's mother and female lover are totally wild. It has some of the funniest dialogue I have seen. My buddy, "Bill from Cleveland", frequently phones and leaves messages quoting these amazing, tasteless scenes. Buy this film......if you have the Pop Tarts! I only wish it were on DVD with special features; that would be amazing!!!!!! Try it, you'll like it.

Laugh? I thought I'd have to change my underwear! The scene of Spike teaching a group of latino kids the alphabet is one of the funniest ever filmed. This is a hidden gem.
