Plot: The ultimate date movie of the mid-1960s, director Claude Lelouch's A Man and a Woman (Un Homme et Une Femme) stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aimee in the title roles. The twosome meet at the boarding school where their children are enrolled. Aimee, an actress, misses her train home, and Trintignant, a professional race car driver, offers her a ride. It is the first of several friendly encounters which eventually blossom into love. Both want to commit to each other, but neither can shake the Past. The now-famous climactic scene in a train station was not scripted at the time of shooting, thus Aimee was unaware that director Lelouch had decided upon a tearful reunion between her and Trintignant. This explains the look of utter surprise on the actress' face. Much has been written about the possible motivation behind Lelouch's decision to film some scenes in color, others in black-and-white. None of the more ardent auterists truly want to hear the director's explanation: he'd run short of money halfway through production, and black-and-white film stock was infinitely cheaper. The winner of two Oscars (one for Best Foreign Film), A Man and A Woman also scored on the top ten with its memorable theme music by Francis Lai. A sequel, A Man and a Woman: 20 Years Later appeared....twenty years later. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Very romantic love story, but some times hard to follow. Anouk is a very pretty actress.

A 'special' love story--with very nice music--not told in a logical way...

That night Anne Gauthier (Aimée) missed her train... Jean-Louis Duroc (Trintignant) offered her a ride back to Paris... Both had their children at the Deauville boarding school... She has a girl named Françoise and he has a boy named Antoine... Jean-Louis knew that her husband was a stuntman who had a tragic accident... She knew that he was married and his wife commits suicide...

Claude Lelouch begins his sensitive exploration on that boat ride where there was a completely different energy in the air, where the sea was seen alive in all its many mood and through intentions looks, and lingering hands he let us know that yes, something was beginning to happen between Anne and Jean-Louis... On that wonderful beach--and through long shots--we see the couple with their children walking, playing, running with hundreds of seagulls screaming all around...

There was a great chemistry between Aimée and Trintignant in "A Man and a Woman"... The attraction between the two stars really resonated... Aimée was very sweet and gorgeous as a woman, but her constant incursions into the past left her experience with more sorrow than joy...

Trintignant was charming... His acting extremely natural... When he received Anne's telegram he left his elegant dinner and took his car driving hundreds of kilometers to join Anne and be with the children...

Lelouch captures breathtaking shots of Deauville's spectacular beach... We all remember the unforgettable scene of the man walking alike as his dog...

The film won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film...

A Challenging yet Rewarding Love Story
Added 11/16/2008

I realized that there was a reason that I recalled "A Man and a Woman"; a film I'd never seen before. It's theme became somewhat of hit back in the late 1960's. I'm glad I finally watched the film because this is a very good movie. The reason I liked it was because of its' ability to tell a unique love story.

We meet a couple of individuals just as they are meeting each other. Their relationship emerges from each person's tragic previous relationship. We get this information in a series of video recollections that each shares with the other. As their relationship grows, much is unspoken and we see the subtle hints that each picks up on. The director, Claude LeLouch, keeps this from being a run-of-the-mill love story by throwing in a somewhat surprizing twist towards the end. That leads to a conclusion that I thought was just the right way to say the right thing.

The reservations that I have with "A Man and a Woman" is the elite aspect of the characters. These are the "Beautiful People" who live in the fast lane of exclusive professions. They each have a young child in boarding school (that's how they meet) and the children are beautiful and well-behaved. That's surprizing since the parents are never all that sure if they'll be by to visit the kids from one weekend to the next. I gripe about this because this could have been a love story that everyone could relate to. The theme of "love the second time around" has been done before but the way this movie suceeds is by acknowledging the importance of the first love. LaLouch's need to portray the woman's first love as some ideal, one-of-a-kind, super man deminishes the rest of us in comparison. Couldn't the first spouse have been a mechanic, accountant, or bus driver. Couldn't we have had characters and life styles we could relate to? Oh well, I confess that I enjoyed watching Anouk Aimee in her lead role. Sure beats Marjorie Main. I was very comfortable with the overall message I took away from "A Man and a Woman"

classic movie from the 60's. The wonderful accompanies a slow to develop but charming and simple story. I would highly recommend this movie to any filmgoer who has not experienced a Claude Lelouch movie.
