Plot: A mythological creature stalks the halls of a museum during a society fundraiser in this cheap sci-fi horror genre knock-off of Alien (1979). Penelope Ann Miller stars as Dr. Margo Green, an evolutionary biologist at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History who receives a shipment of artifacts from a colleague performing fieldwork in Brazil. Among the contents are leaves containing a rare fungus that, unbeknownst to Green or anyone else, attracts the palate of a rapidly mutating, lizard-like monster called Kothoga that has stowed away on a Brazilian freighter and has found a subterranean route into the museum from Lake Michigan. Before long, several museum employees have become decapitated snack food for the beast, which prefers to dine on human hypothalamuses and pituitary glands. Despite dire warnings from the museum staff, a gruff coroner (Audra Lindley) and the investigating detective, Lt. Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore), the Windy City's oblivious mayor orders a black-tie museum fundraiser to proceed. During the event, the building's high-tech security system locks Green, D'Agosta, the mayor, and many chi-chi party guests in with the hungry animal, forcing everyone to attempt an escape through an underground waterway with which Kothoga is all too familiar. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Whoever Said That Museums Were Boring Places?...

Many years ago I read the book, THE RELIC by Preston / Child. I was impressed. Then, I happened to read an article in FANGORIA about a coming movie-version. I was excited! I waited until it came out, watched it, and hated it. Why? Because it was nothing like the book! Plus, the monster was nowhere near as hideous as I had imagined it to be! Well, I just re-watched THE RELIC last night and have discovered something. This is a fantastic monster movie! Time has healed my wounds and dulled my memory enough to simply sit back and enjoy the story. I approached it as though I'd never seen it before, allowing my mind to take it in without preconceived judgements. Presto! I loved it! Sure, it's got that ALIEN / MIMIC thing going on, but hey, it's still a wonderful monster flick w/ a true juggernaut of death for a monster! Definitely worth owning... P.S.- Watch for James Whitmore (THEM!) as a scientist, and Audra Lindley (TV's Three's Company) as the coroner! Great stuff...

I just watched the trailer for this movie and saw the dog .... I want to see this movie but if something bad happens to the dog I don't think I will. Animals getting hurt even in movies is too disturbing. Can anyone tell me yea or nay on this so I'll know whether to rent the movie .... Thanks!

WHERE IS SPECIAL AGENT PENDERGAST WHEN YOU NEED HIM?

I like Tom Sizemore, and Penelope Ann Miller, and this little movie had some half decent scares in it ( particularly towards the end ), but it is nowhere near as frightening as the Preston, and Child book, and I for one really had a problem with the absence of the eccentric FBI agent Pendergast, and the often unintentionaly funny, though persistent, rag-reporter, Smithback ( both main characters in the book ). Still, despite some abysmal lapses in credibility I found myself liking the film enough to watch it again. It's hardly a masterpiece, but it does not deserve to be vilified either.

"B" Horror movie
Added 9/30/2008

There's nothing wrong with "B" horror movies-I like some (The Unnamable, Pumpkin Head, etc etc), but this was not memorable. There were some scary scenes, but overall, it was 2 hours I'll never get back.

May not have made it to the big screen but is really a good movie even with no name actors, thrilling from start to finish, leaves you wondering what is going to happen next
