Plot: What do you do after love at first sight? That's the question posed in this romantic comedy-drama set in Chicago. Darius Lovehall (Larenz Tate) is a novelist who is giving a reading at the Sanctuary, an upscale club presenting jazz and poetry to a bohemian clientele. Shortly before his set, he meets Nina Mosley (Nia Long), a woman who is a gifted photographer, despite the fact that she just lost her job. They exchange small talk, and Darius makes his interest clear when -- on the spot -- he retitles a love poem A Blues For Nina. A mutual attraction is sparked between them; soon Darius finds Nina's address on a check and shows up unannounced at her apartment, a visit resulting in a photo session that turns seriously sexy. So far, so good, but neither Darius or Nina are sure where to go next after this promising start. She's just gotten out of a relationship and isn't sure if she still cares for her old boyfriend or not, while Darius' buddies read him the riot act for wanting to give up his freedom so early on in the game. Love Jones was the debut feature for African-American writer and director Theodore Witcher; Isaiah Washington, Bill Bellamy, and Lisa Nicole Carson lead the supporting cast. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I love this film, I love this soundtrack- I think it is on par with Pretty Woman as one of the best love stories. Not only did this movie help 2 really good actors shine. I fell in love with the plot, storyline- the only thing wrong with this move is that its not longer- I want to see "where they are now". Did i mention I LOVE THIS FILM- ok good :)

Late film critic Gene Siskel said that this movie shows how easy it is to make a movie. He was giving it a compliment even though now that might have been taken as an insult these days. Even though I didnt always agree with Gene Siskel, I agree with him here. Love Jones is a shining example of how a love story should be: realistic with real characters in real situations.

The story chronicles the ups and downs of the relationship between Darius Lovehall(Larenz Tate) and Nina(Nia Long). Larenz Tate and Nia Long are more than just a beautiful couple on screen. These two actually have chemistry together. You can feel the vibe between these two whenever the are on screen and its fantastic.

Bill Bellamy is pretty funny as the deceitful Wood and Lisa Nicole Carson is great as Nina's friend Simone. Isaiah Washington is just as great as Darius's close friend Savon and I sigh every time I see him in a movie. The guy is a great actor whose movie career is put on halt by industry lowlifes and the childish games they play. You can believe that he called the little weasel on Grey's Anatomy out of his name but anybody that knows how Follywood works knows better than to believe any "official story" from the biggest liars on the planet. At any rate...

Love Jones is a wonderful love story full of interesting and likable characters that are in realistic situations that anybody that has been in love can relate too. You love these people(yes even Bill Bellamy's character even though what he did to Darius was wrong) because they are believable and are not portrayed as gangstas and tramps. Not one obscene stereotype can be found here. Contrast that with the Romance movies of toady. Exactly. In closing if you love Black Cinema then you would do well to own a copy of this movie.

i saw this last weekend for the first time in 11 years and it did not seem dated at all...it was still lively and fresh. it is a revelation to see black movies made by black people that portray black people in a positive light, that doesn't succumb to stereotypes...or show black people the way others think they see them...i'm pretty iffy about romantic comedy...most romantic comedies tend to serve up cliches and they rarely have real endings...i'm not above happy endings, just not at the expense of truth....the realationship between darius and nina, played by larenz tate and nia long is real...true to form, they meet, fall in love, stumble, get back together, screw up more and yet, they still try to make it work...when i read the review for this movie, it was supposed to be an advertisement for the black poetry/spoken word scene...but this film goes deeper than that...it's just about black people trying their best to maintain their relationships, even if they're not always perfect...larenz tate was always underrated as a black actor...and yes, ladies, he is good eye candy...nia long is probably one of the few women besides my mom and sis i would take a bullet for...she's like a smooth piece of belgian chocolate....whether you've seen it once or 100 times, it's great....
