Fireproof
Added 10/28/2009
This is a really good movie, very timely. I am surprised to learn that this movie is made by a community, not Hollywood. It makes it even better when you know that the main couple is a real couple. The extras are very funny! A must see!

Great message, great on Blu-ray

I really enjoyed this movie. Great message and some powerful emotional moments (even though the production quality is not up to movies costing millions more to make). Some moments of good humor as well. Looks great on Blu-ray.

Take it for what it's worth!

Briefly, it was a very good drama with a volunteer cast of unknowns except for Kirk Cameron who surprised me with an incredible acting job! He's not that teenager in Growing Pains anymore. There is alot of humor and reality in the movie. If your a christian, you can see what the writer is trying to say pretty easy. If your not a christian, this movie will inspire and stir up alot of emotion you probably never knew you had. Because of the unknown actors in this movie, it was much more "real" to me. It was very believable. I think everyone should see it and then reflect on it. I was quite moved, it was an experience.

Worth Your Time and Money
Added 11/3/2008
Since this is supposed to be a Christian movie, my immediate urge is to evaluate it on the basis of its doctrinal faithfulness. From this point of view, I would say some evangelicals, particularly Calvinists may have some problems with "Fireproof", specifically on two fronts. Firstly, it is in regard to how to do evangelism related to the doctrine of limited atonement where in this movie, the message "Jesus died for you" seems to be declared indiscriminately which, if one is familiar with Kirk Cameron's and Ray Comfort's "The Way of the Master," they themselves disagree with this approach. Secondly, due to its marriage-centered theme, unless we are careful, we may mistakenly view the gospel mainly or merely to cure troubled marriages through therapeutic programs.
With this said, however, this movie is one of a few examples where something is better than nothing for at least three reasons. Firstly, it is a family-friendly movie that portrays realities of what happens in most homes as well as godly responsible parents with a genuine care over their children. So if anyone is having a hard time finding a meaningful profanity-free, bloodbath-free, and lewdness-free movie to watch, "Fireproof" is one of the rare few these days. Secondly, with half of all marriages in America ending in divorce and the worldview of marriage as being a contract rather than a covenant, as well as adverse examples from political, religious leaders, and celebrities of their shattered marriages, "Fireproof" is helpful to prevent further damages in society; in particular for singles planning to get married, as well as those facing relationship issues that potentially lead to divorce or even those who have divorced. If there were only a single message, but there is certainly more, to learn from "Fireproof", it would be for couples considering a divorce not to rush to look for lawyers and sign papers. And for everyone, the lesson is that marriage is a covenant to stick together for better or worse, though it may be hard to embrace this covenantal view of marriage unless one understands the gospel, because marriage is an illustration of an eternal relationship between Christ as the bridegroom and the Church as His bride which leads to the third and most important reason, that is, it presents the Christian gospel. If Steven Spielberg spices up his movies with secular humanistic messages; if witchcraft, which is a form of religion, is unashamedly displayed and encouraged in the Harry Potter's series; why can't the public be exposed to Christianity-themed films? Therefore, despite some criticisms of "Fireproof," I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it still.

A MUST SEE MOVIE FOR THE YEAR, AND A MUST OWN.
Added 10/31/2008
RELATIONSHIPS. That is what this movie is about. It is about the relationships between the men of a firehouse that depend upon each other. It is about a marriage and depending on each other, wife to husband, and he to her. The movie is about parent relationships--the kind that last a lifetime. The movie is about God, and a personal relationship with Him. RELATIONSHIPS!
From the makers of "FACING the GIANTS" & "Flywheel", this newest movie, "Fireproof", has surpassed what many 'Hollywood' movies attain. It is an emotional roller coaster that will have you gasping, laughing, crying, holding your breath, wanting to scream a warning...and perhaps, even a standing ovation at the end. The movie is filled with plenty of firefighting action, hero stunts, as well as some of the most tender moments ever placed on film.
Capt. Caleb Holt (Kirk Cameron) must try to guide the firehouse team through many emergencies, training, and firehouse interaction while he sees his marriage dissolving on the home front. He gives up on the marriage...UNTIL...his father convinces him to wait 40 days and follow what he calls a "The Love Dare," a daily task written out in a notebook by the father's own hand. Wife Catherine (Erin Bethea), also is ready to dissolve the marriage going nowhere. She gets attention at work from a young doctor and decides a divorce is needed as soon as possible. Caleb accepts his dad's challenge but his daily attempts seem only to fail. Fortunately, a fellow firefighter, Lt. Michael Simmons (Ken Bevel) is a constant, dedicated, and Christian friend as well as co-worker.
There will be many who will say this movie is for every couple that is having difficulties and their marriage relationship is in jeopardy. That is true, BUT, this marriage is even better for working marriages, marriages that yet have some flame, at least a spark, so they can see again what is important in life and in a relationship. Not to "Fireproof" the marriage but to "fan the flames."
And just when the movie's ending arrives, you are wishing it never had to end, there is one additional surprise extra-ending. I'll not spoil it. What a wonderful job of writing by brothers, Stephen and Alex Kendrick. Alex also directed. What a ministry/witness by the entire production staff, cast, and the church that prays and accomplishes a product like this story.
When available, give it as a gift, birthday, wedding, or any occasion. The gift that keeps on giving. 5 gems for the crowns of everyone associated with this picture.

not for everyone- but great for those it speaks to
Added 11/14/2009
Not every movie has to speak to everyone. For instance, I can't stand Stanley Kubrick movies- I think he's an over rated hack. And just like that, some folks are not going to be predisposed to like this film. If you are predisposed to be an anti-christian bigot, this film will rub you the wrong way. If you aren't married and don't care for marriage, this film will pass you by as well.
Technical merits- yes, the reviews that say this would work better as a Lifetime movie are correct- although, I think this would fit better on the Hallmark channel. ;) Some of the special effects were a bit on the cheap side, but they weren't so bad as to distract from the movie. My biggest technical pet peeve was not riled- there were no booms in any of the frames- something I see more and more often in professional big budget Hollywood movies- so the budget here did put some constraints no the picture, but it is more in the sense of constraint, rather than resulting in an appearance of amateurism.
Acting merits- Kirk Cameron was great- the rest tried really hard and none of them stunk. Holding this movie to the Hallmark Channel standard, and you can say they all put in fine performances- none were oscar worthy, but that's not really where this movie is aiming. The yelling scene at the beginning was believable- I'm sort of baffled by the reviewers that didn't get that. Frustrated folks lash out- and some people are yellers. Such is life.
Plot and Story- The first twenty minutes of this movie are the hardest to get through. Most films get you to like people before they throw them through the wringer- this movie does it backwards. You won't like anyone in this movie for the first fifteen to twenty minutes. Why? Because this is a film about a marriage about to fall apart and when a marriage is that broken, no one in it is at their best. We are presented with two selfish, self centered people. (Yes, two, for those that cheered for the wife the whole way through the film!) It takes a while to warm up to them.
The role of Christianity in the movie- Christianity is a true Deus ex Machina in this film. But, for those that experienced salvific grace, that's exactly what it is. This movie was made by a Church, so should you really be surprised that Jesus gets a starring role? Isn't it more surprising that in a country as Christian as this one, that we don't see conversion experiences playing a larger role in more films than we do?
This movie will make you cry, without a doubt. And any stupid thing you did to your spouse in the last week? You're going to end up appologizing for it. But that's what this movie is for- not to entertain, but to help people build up stronger marriages. And in that, five stars is not enough.
