Plot: Jon Amiel directed this satire on mistaken-identity thrillers and the spy genre, scripted by Robert Farrar, Tim John, and Oliver Butcher from Farrar's unpublished novel, Watch That Man. In the female lead, Joanne Whalley returned to films after a three-year absence, choosing to do so with director Amiel. Farrar's Hitchcockian-style story focuses on naive Blockbuster Video clerk Wallace Ritchie (Bill Murray) who travels from Des Moines, Iowa, to London to celebrate his birthday with his wealthy younger brother, James (Peter Gallagher). When he turns up on the same night that James has plans to attend a high-profile client dinner party (that he hopes will bring him millions from a German investment firm), James needs to keep Wallace away during the evening, so he gives Wallace a ticket to the participatory Theater of Life. The theater game requires Wallace to assume a character and interact with actors portraying people in dramatic situations. At the corner phone booth, the initial call should begin the evening of innocent fun. However, the phone instructions Wallace receives are actually intended for an assassin, part of a scheme to end the current UK regime and revive the Cold War. The real assassin gets the call from the Theater of Life. Blissfully unaware, Wallace walks without fear into a complex web of intrigue involving defense ministers, call girls, and Russian hitmen. For Wallace, all the world's a stage, and he's amazed at the skill of the actors, including beautiful enigmatic Lori (Joanne Whalley) -- while Wallace's pursuers are mystified by their adversary's fearlessness in the face of threats, torture and bullets. Farrar got the idea for this comedy from a chance remark at a party: The inspiration came from a dinner party, when somebody told me about these strange live theater performances which were all the rage in England in the '80s. The idea was to telephone for instructions if you wanted to take part. My immediate reaction was, 'Wouldn't it be fabulous if somebody got the wrong number, and it all went hopelessly wrong?' Filming took place in London's East End (Three Mills Studios), at a variety of London locations, and just outside London at the Elstree Film Studios. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Good Old-Fashioned Laugh-Aloud Humor
Added 10/24/2009

If you don't find Bill Murray funny in general, this movie is not for you. If you do, then you're in for a treat. This is a fast-paced, genuinely funny movie. Not deep, just funny. Think Abbott and Costello, for a lot of physical comedy and slapstick humor.

Joanne Whalley, as the cabinet minister's call girl, and Alfred Molina, as "The Butcher" also put in wonderful performances. But Bill Murray steals the show with his hilarious Matreshka dance that he performs with a group of Russian dancers. If you're in the mood for comedy, don't miss this highly underrated little movie!

Pink Panther Meets A Fish Called Wanda With Hilarious Results!

It's a strange thing about films starring Bill Murray as I usually find myself hating them the first couple of times of viewing and then gradually finding myself enjoying them a whole lot more after a few more viewings. Just like "Groundhog Day" I hated this film when I first saw it and just like "Groundhog Day" I found myself liking this a lot more after each repeated viewing. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that this is my favourite Bill Murray film. In an obvious reference to/spoof of Peter Seller's work on the entire Pink Panther franchise from the intro Mancini-esque opening sequence music ala "The Return of the Pink Panther" to the bumbling detective/spy protagonist this film has actually remained a whole lot funnier than that film that upon recent viewing has truly aged very, very poorly. There are also links to "A Fish Called Wanda" as well with the scene where the male "actor" abusive to his "girlfriend" is also called Otto and also the female lead Whalley just like in that film first tries to outwit the protagonist before eventually falling for him; again, this film has aged much better than that other English/American collaboration too.

Overall, this is a very good action comedy and falls into that rare category of comedy where even the jokes age very well and also one that I can actually see myself enjoying over the years through repeated viewing. The only knock on this dvd version though is the lack of any meaningful special features as both the picture and sound quality in Dolby 5.1 Surround is very good. I still don't know why this is so for me but thankfully I decided to give this film another chance and although I hated it the first couple of viewings, I now find myself enjoying this more each time I watch it. I guess I can only describe it as the Bill Murray effect!

Written Just for Murray
Added 7/5/2009

Much like Ground Hog day, this script was written just for Bill Murray. No one else could make this ridiculous plot work. And like Ground Hog Day, this has become one of my favorite Murray outings. Forget what the elitist critics say. They don't get comedy and they don't get Murray. He plays a dimwitted simpleton thrust into what he perceives is a live action mystery theater constructed just for his amusement, but what is actually a real life cloak and dagger adventure. This sets up perfect Bull Murray scenarios that he milks for all the laughs possible. He plays it to the hilt and the results are hilarious. If you like Bill Murray's humor, you will love this movie. Don't look for deep meaning. Don't expect answers to the meaning of our existence (unless it's just to laugh). This movie delivers the hoots at a fast pace. Nuke the popcorn, pour a Dr. Pepper, open up the red vines and enjoy.

Great crazy comedy

Probably Bill Murray's best movie. A very improbable story about a guy who thinks he's acting in a "reality" TV show when in fact he's mistaken by British MI-5 and the KGB as a CIA agent. Just a fun film that goes non-stop.
