Plot: Co-written by Jonathan Tolins and based on his original stage play, this Showtime drama concerns the possible role of genetics in determining sexual orientation. Suzanne Gold (Jennifer Beals), a medical-school dropout who manages a clothing store, marries genetic researcher Rob Stein (Jon Tenney), the son of Orthodox Jews who disapprove of what they perceive as their son's meddling with God's prerogatives. When Rob submits his and Suzanne's unborn son to his colleagues' experimental test procedures, the baby appears to have a 90 percent chance of being homosexual. Suzanne confides to her mother, Phyllis (Faye Dunaway), that she fears for the added burden her new family will face. Mom's got a big mouth, and before long Suzanne's father, Walter (Garry Marshall), and gay brother, David (Brendan Fraser), are weighing in with their conflicting opinions about whether or not Suzanne should abort the child and what such an action would mean about David's place in the family. The strain of such a decision ruptures existing fault lines in both the Gold family and Suzanne's marriage, culminating in revelation, transformation, and a group hug. ~ Brian J. The movie is very powerful and the medical research depicted in it is very real. What would you do if you knew that a pregnancy would result in giving birth to a homosexual child? That medical fact put this otherwise liberal family in conflict and forced them to face their heretofore suppressed homophobia, each in his or her own way. This is a movie well worth watching. The acting is superb, the characterizations real, and the subject matter pertinent and contemporary.

A huge fan of Jennifer Beals I bought the DVD blindly. However, this movie hits so close to home I shared it with my mother. The testing of a fetus is so controversial and brings so many questions to all that watch the movie. Should I test my child, what would I do, what is the right thing to do? I am of the mindset that just because science can do it, doesn't always mean we should!!! I know it would have robbed my family of 2 lives that were cut short due to a terminal illness...and knowing my own mother, I don't know that she would have had the abortions even if she did know!!!!!

My question is, does this movie have a soundtrack? The music in the movie is awesome! The entire movie was done well...thought provoking and shows what each person can really manage in their own worlds. It will have you thinking about choices you might make....you think!!!!!!

I really like this movie. The actors are top-notch and the subject matter is deep and frightening. It brings to the forefront what many, including those in the LGBT community, are afraid to REALLY discuss. It's worth owning and gifting. My ONLY negative comment is the actors playing the gay characters don't seem completely comfortable playing a couple. Their interactions were awkward and stiff. I also noticed the straight couples kissed, but these two would 'hug' to express their intimacy. It stood out to me.

A REALLY GREAT MOVIE, THAT BRINGS OUT THE FEALINGS AND PROBLEMS WITHIN A FAMILY, WHEN ONE MEMBER OF THAT FAMILY IS GAY. IT CONCENTRATES MORE ON THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE FAMILIES REACTION TO THE GAY PERSON, TILL NEAR THE END, AND TRIES TO DEAL WITH THE IDEA IF MEDICAL TESTS DIAGNOSIS FAMILIAL GENE'S DIAGNOSING GAY/LESBIAN DIAGNOSIS INUTERO. THUS GIVING AN OPTION OF TERMINATING THE PREGNANCY IF THE PARENTS DO NOT WANT A GAY OR LESBIAN CHHILD. I AM SO GLAD THIS CANNOT BE DONE IN REALITY. JM

The twilight of the Golds - Well worth a look !!

Enjoyed the movie a lot, I felt that it is a realistic depiction of a gay relationship in the 21st century. The ethical issues of gene research
could also be big issues in the gay community in years to come.
