Plot: Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father) directed this drama about a Belfast boxer, filmed with Dublin locations substituting for Belfast. Released after his 14-year prison sentence for IRA activities, 32-year-old Danny Flynn (Daniel Day-Lewis) returns to his old neighborhood and sees former-flame Maggie (Emily Watson), who has an unhappy marriage and now raises her son alone while her husband is in prison. To get back in the boxing ring, Danny gets the community-center gym back in operation and starts training, encountering opposition from militant IRA members, including Harry (Gerald McSorley). Danny and Maggie grow closer, but after a bomb sets off events leading to the destruction of the gym, Danny leaves for a disastrous boxing match in London. More grim situations arise when he returns to Belfast. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Highly recommended ... and I generally hate boxing movies. In fact, I hate them so much I stayed away from this film when it was first released despite the fact that Daniel Day Lewis, an actor whose work I adore, starred in it. Dumb. I saw it awhile ago on HBO and was so blown away by it I bought the DVD. All I can say is, it's not your average boxing movie. Yes, it's about a helluva boxer but it's also a very thoughtful political drama and a great love story. It's beautifully written and the entire cast is superb. The scenes between Daniel and Emily Watson smolder with both understatement and intensity. It probably helps if the viewer knows a little about the Catholic v Protestant divide in Northern Ireland (still part of the U.K.) but any movie lover who listens well should have no problem following it.

I am a huge movie buff, and The Boxer is hands down one of my all-time favorite movies. Daniel Day-Lewis, probably the best actor working today, gives one of the greatest performances of his career and Emily Watson lends solid support. Gerard McSorley also turns in a chilling performance as one of the best (or worst) big-screen villains in history.

A rich and moving story with no shortage of gripping drama and enough of a love story to be compelling without being excessive, set against a backdrop of a sport that is at it's core and by it's nature one of dedication and triumph.

This is one of the greatest films of the last twenty years and is a must for fans of quality cinema and first-class drama.

More Great Work From Daniel Day-Lewis
Added 5/23/2008

The Boxer has many elements that could have made this a great film. The acting , the setting in Catholic Belfast during the Troubles, the compelling story of a man trying to find his way back into society after a 14 year prison term all of which make this really compelling viewing.
I would have rated the film higher except for one weakness. The romantic element between Day-Lewis' character and the girl he left behind (Emily Watson)when he was imprisoned while essential to the overall plot at times slows the films momentum significantly. From my perspective this could have been edited a bit and the movie would have been brilliant.
Nevertheless Daniel Day_Lewis once again provides a stunning performance in a role that would be hard to imagine any other actor doing better.
