Plot: Devout Pentecostal preacher Eulis Sonny Dewey (Robert Duvall) of New Boston, Texas, has a lovely wife (Farrah Fawcett) and two children. But not only has Jessie been cheating on him with a younger minister, Horace (Todd Allen), she has pulled a few strings to gain control of his church. Sonny goes into a violent rage, attacking Horace with a bat during a softball game. With Horace in a coma, Sonny leaves town on a bus, headed east for a new life. He changes his name to E.F., baptizing himself as The Apostle to God. Arriving in the black community of Bayou Boutte, Louisiana, he meets Brother Blackwell (John Beasley) who helps him start anew. E.F. works as a garage mechanic and preaches on the streets and a local radio station owned by Elmo (Rich Dial). He leads the community in remodeling a rundown church and gains supporters as he seeks his own salvation. In sorrow from the deaths of both his mother (June Carter Cash) and Horace, he encounters more problems when a racist (Billy Bob Thornton) attempts to drive a bulldozer into his church. Eventually, Jessie finds out where he's living and informs the police. Duvall wrote, directed, and financed this exploration of the evangelical world, shown at the Toronto Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Filmed in Texas (Denton County, Collin County, and Dallas) and Lafayette, Louisiana. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

I love this movie, the love of the Christian Faith how God can save even the worst of sinners to repentance. God bless Robert Duvall. an awesome man of God to be inspired by Jesus to write such a beautiful movie.

Nice Performance, Boring Story
Added 9/3/2009

I found the plot extremely repetitious and boring. Nothing much happens except a lot of preaching and good intentions. Some nice acting by Duvall. But I couldn't believe in him as a genuine man of God because he showed no deep emotional remorse over his killing the pastor or over the abusive way he treated his wife. He just runs away and tries to start a new life. This showed he was a coward, unready to take responsibility for his base actions. If he had any sense of conscience, he would have given himself up to the law and accepted his punishment for his vicious act. The movie was much too long.

The Apostle VHS

Original thought on how evangelists love God most and their neighbor as themselves while flesh will be flesh and where there's flesh there's problems....the classic appearance is Johnny Cash's real wife, June Carter Cash, playing the wife of the apostle, the woman spurned, just
fed up with The Apostle having access to so many other
than her on his evangelistic excursions....every
preacher must have to struggle with what Robert
Duvall heroically depicts as The Apostle....a must
see for anybody who loves God most and their neighbor
as oneself and struggling to keep satisfying
self as third to serve God from the heart God is first, neighbor is second, self third place....in short....an excellent choice to help anyone
think about how a person can love God most yet constantly
struggling with the normal desire God has build into the human heart, fleshly desires.

make the movie and for his fabulous acting.

A Remarkable Movie!
Added 7/30/2009

I absolutely loved this movie. It was a labor of love on the part of Robert Duvall, who wrote, directed, starred in, and funded its production. It is one of the few religious movies I have seen that do not present Christians and Christianity in an unfavorable light. That is not to say that the chief character, a pentacostal preacher named "Sonny," is perfect or faultless--far from it. He is, however, rather than being a fake or a phony, the genuine article--a man of faith truly sold out to God--lock, stock, and barrel. I highly recommend this production. Don't miss it!
