Plot: Maruschka Detmers stars as Hannah Senesh, a real-life Hungarian Jew who became a martyr to the cause of freedom during WW II. Though safely ensconced in Palestine at the outbreak of the war, Hannah volunteers to venture behind enemy lines in Europe on a life-or-death mission. Unfortunately, she is captured, undergoing unspeakable tortures before the Germans are finished with her. The script, based on Hannah's diaries (as edited by Yoel Palgi), surprisingly downplays heroics in favor of sensationalism; the prison scenes could just as well have been lifted from a Linda Blair babes behind bars picture. Even so, Detmers is excellent in the title role, while Ellen Burstyn is likewise superb as Hannah's mother. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Must see movie
Added 1/7/2008

I watched this movie soon after it came out on VHS. This is one of only a handful of movies that has had a life long impact on me. I was sobbing at the end of the movie. It believe it is important for all of us to hear the stories of those who have given up everything for freedom. The story of Hanna and all that she endured is very moving and a reminder to be grateful for all that we have.

Zero for two
Added 1/17/2007

I bought this and "The Hiding Place" at the same time. Two strikes on me. Both have similar themes - about different perspectives of Jewish people during World War II. "Hanna's War" is allegedly a true story, or perhaps based upon one, perhaps loosely based, as it seems rather modern in presentation and lacking in the feel of the 1940s. Very slow; very dull; you don't really get engaged with the characters. Being a war movie, some characters die, and you find yourself not caring, and in fact hoping that the writers, producers, directors, cast and crew will all be executed as well.

A Great and Relevant Film About the Heroes of the Holocaust
Added 10/8/2004

I just saw this film last night and I was overwhelmed. Hanna was an extremely strong and brave woman. Her story and the story of her fellow paratroopers will touch your heart. It really shows how dedicated the early Jewish settlers of Palestine really where. I will definitely watch this one again and again.

Wonderful film and superior acting by Marushka Detmers
Added 8/26/2003

This film should have made Detmers a star after her role in "Devil in the Flesh"....It is a superior film based on a true story about a hero whose values were stronger than her own survival...It is a film all should see for the history and most of all for Detmers...a talent who Hollywood did not know what to do with, but lucky for us had two films that showed us her talents.

Great movie - Heartbreaking story.

This movie lacks the sophistication of the Hollywood blockbusters. However, the message, the script and the acting are so powerful you won't notice after the first 20 minutes.
