Plot: Better Than Chocolate is a lesbian love story. Walking home from an evening at the lesbian club 'Cat's Ass,' Maggie is confronted by a gang of skinheads. Suddenly a minibus comes to a screeching halt and out jumps Kim. The skins move on, and Maggie thanks Kim, who watches her go. This is their first meeting. Maggie has recently dropped out of law school and now works in a women's shop. To avoid a confrontation with her mother, she makes up a success story and tells her that she's living in a beautiful apartment. As her mother is having her difficulties with her second husband, she decides to take her young son and come to live with Maggie for a while. Meanwhile, Maggie is housesitting the apartment of a female performer on tour. As fate might have it, she runs across Kim again and they find themselves at the new apartment making love in the shower -- at which moment Maggie's mother and little brother step in. The film was screened as part of the Panorama section of the 49th International {~Berlin Film Festival}, 1999. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, All Movie Guide

AMAZON CENSORS THE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD VERSION
Added 8/18/2009

I discovered this by purchasing this movie I'd seen once before and thought it was missing a few bits - particularly sexy bits. So I rented it via iTunes and VIOLA! the entire movie is right there. The video quality is poor, at best, like an old videotape that has been viewed too many times. To pour salt on the wound, finding a "Contact" link to send my complaint to has so far proven impossible.

This is a delightful film. Not perfect, but the parts that work work well - as one other reviewer said, at least two erotic scenes that are actually erotic (and CENSORED from Amazon's digital download) which is a rarity in any film genre. But that's not the only reason to watch this one. There's not a bad performance among the cast, it's well shot and never wanes from its determined breeziness.

I thought better of Amazon. I will never, ever recommend making a digital movie download purchase or rental from this site.

This is such a fun movie...you won't find anything intellectually overwhelming, but what you will get is a cute movie, good music, and a happy ending!

Better Than Most

This was a cute little lesbian romance that covered issues that many young people experience in their lives. There is Maggie's desire to make her own life as a writer instead of going to college like her mother wants, and her hesitation about coming out to her mother. Her mother is dealing with feeling rejected and not sexual due to her husband's affair. The bookstore owner is having a censorship battle with customs in B.C. and confusing feelings for Judy, a mtf transexual. Judy must deal with her parents disowning her and some not too friendly lesbians at the dyke bar. I loved that every character in the movie had their own conflicts and found happiness in the end. Kim and Megan experience relationship problems, and the bookstore and Maggie come under attack by homophobes. Great story of triumph over many problems, and shows the importance of sticking together with family and friends. The romance between Maggie and Kim is sweet as well. Anyone could probably identify with at least one character in the movie if they are gay or straight. Love the music and performances of Judy as well. One of the better lesbian movies I've seen.

One dimensional and cliché-ridden

Rarely have I seen a movie this bad. I wanted to like it and kept waiting for it to redeem itself, but it didn't. The characters are flat and the story line is predictable and slightly annoying.

The Bottom Line:

Better than Chocolate means well, but the movie isn't very well-written and all the LGBT trappings can't hide a painfully formulaic romance between the main pairing; if you're in the mood for a lesbian romance please watch something good like Show Me Love instead.
