Plot: One of the early direct-to-video horror films from Charles Band's Full Moon Entertainment, this good-looking entry stars 21 Jump Street's Michael Benedetti as Corey Thornton, who inherits a mansion in the Louisiana bayou from his late father. Corey wonders why his father, who abandoned him, would leave him such an expansive estate, and also wonders exactly what the brothel across the way has to do with any of it. The fact that Edgar Winter is part of the brothel's house band should have given him a clue, and when stone hands start embedding themselves in people's heads it is obvious to everyone but Corey that the brothel is a front for a coven of witches. It turns out that Corey's father was heavily involved in black magic and wants to rise from the grave to possess his son's body, and must consign Corey's soul to the netherworld (hence the title) to do so. Denise Gentile plays a tempting hooker, Holly Floria is the love interest, and Anjanette Comer from The Loved One and The Baby is her mother, the mansion's housekeeper. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Look and listen a little deeper. Better than it initially appears. Could be a cult classic.

THE DVD WITH ALL THE MATERIAL IS OKAY.
It's one of the Better Full Moon Productions from the early days.
The Story is creepy and you can smell that old fashioned Louisiana-Voodoo!

American Gothic
Added 3/24/2008

After finishing this movie back when I first rented it years ago, I felt that the ending was rather abrupt. It seemed more like a short story or a particularly good episode of "Night Gallery". Once the viewer understands that there is not a long, convoluted plot to this film, and that this isn't some mindless slasher flick, they can appreciate this rather pleasant surprise from Full Moon Video. Although they are known for making purposely B-movieish fare, this one they apparently tried to make as a more high-class entry, and succeeded.

As other reviewers have given excellent synopsis here, I won't repeat the premise other than to say it is classically gothic, with the requisite handsome young heir, the beautiful mystery girl, the old mansion in the forboding swamp, the sinister townspeople, and a growing air of menace. The plot is simple, and builds slowly but inexorably. The cast does an outstanding job of creating a claustrophobic air ala "Rosemary's Baby". This film is all about atmosphere and, almost like a cajun "Wicker Man", it should appeal to fans of Hammer films.

I must make special mention of the soundtrack. I would have given this film maybe 3 and a half stars as I felt its one major drawback was that it seemed too short after the build up, but the music lends it a moodiness that has stuck with me many years after watching it. A lonely, blue-sy jazz score, it by itself easily elevates the score by another star and makes me want to get a copy just for that reason alone.

Full Moon needs to be applauded for aiming high with this one, and even if they fell slightly short of the mark, they still succeeded in making an oft overlooked little jewel for those who like their sinister cinema flavored with a touch of high quality.

(Another fair movie with a terrific jazz/blues soundtrack is "Verne Miller", with Scott Glenn playing the real-life gangster.)

5 for a reason

I gave this movie 5 stars, because it reminded me enough of Hitchcock mixed with Charles Dickens topped off with Cajun suave that it made it a viewing pleasure.
It would have been better if they had left out the special effects and concentrated more on a good evil storyline.
The characters turn in good performances, but the story is in parts quite brutal.
Denise Gentile is my forever favorite actress in her stunning beauty and nuances of her talent, but she never gets to do much besides the obvious.
5 stars, because they honestly all tried and succeeded past a B movie and were quirky enough to make you smile.
