Plot: Love blooms for a would-be hired killer in Angel's Dance, which blends elements of a crime thriller with black comedy. Tony (Kyle Chandler) is offered a job with a powerful Mafia family after he saves the life of the capo's nephew, even though Tony isn't sure he's really interested in a life of crime. To give him a crash course in his new line of work, Tony is sent to L.A. to study with Rosellini (James Belushi), a hired killer of no small reputation. After assigning him Nietzsche as required reading and staging a few practice sessions with water pistols, Rosellini gives Tony his final homework project -- pick a name at random from the phone book, find the person, and kill him or her. The name Tony comes up with is Angelica Chase (Sheryl Lee), Angel to her friends. Tony finds Angel just in time to interrupt her latest suicide attempt; Angel is beautiful and charming, but an emotional wreck with eccentric tastes, a caffeinated personality, and a job at a mortuary (she even lives next door). Tony is immediately infatuated and can't bring himself to kill her, so Rosellini decides he has to take over the job, but to the surprise of everyone, Angel knows how to handle herself in a time of crisis. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A VERY SURPRISING GEM

AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS MOVIE, THE FEMALE ACTRESS REALLY LOOKED LIKE A LOSER... MAYBE ... BECAUSE SHE WAS A LOSER! SHE HAD A DEAD-END JOB, HER ONLY FAMILY MEMBER WAS DYING, ETC.
SHE, HERSELF FELT THAT SHE WAS A MAJOR LOSER. SO MUCH IN FACT THAT SHE TRIED TO KILL HERSELF.
BUT A TWIST OF FATE TURNS THIS "LOSER", INTO A POLISHED PROFESSIONAL AND PRETTY "WINNER". I AM NOT TELLING YOU HOW THIS HAPPENS BUT THE WAY THIS TRANSFORMATION IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE HAPPENED IS WELL-THOUGHT OUT AND BELIEVABLE.
FOLKS, IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING THIS MOVIE, LET ME TELL YOU THAT YOU WILL NOT BE DESAPOINTED. IT IS VERY ENTERTAINING, WELL ACTED, AND OVERALL A WONDEFUL MOVIE.
ENJOY!

This is below Kyles acting levels

This was so disappointing. When I see Chandler acting I usually enjoy him but in this movie, he is very disappointing and I find that this is a turkey movie or as they used to be called. I hope to see him in some good movies. The acting is so bad and for Jim Belushi, all the actors are very disappointing to watch. I expect great things from both of these actors and I did not get that with this movie.

Karate?
Added 7/3/2003

I started watching this movie by accident. I was sitting with two friends when we watched the scene with the bowling pins and the handgun. My friend fell out of his chair and I could not speak for several minutes. We had never seen the violence of a repressed bowler rendered in such elegant detail. After this, the movie transitions from scene to scene with an almost Zen-like abandon. Violence melts into lovemaking; libraries turn into war zones. Best of all, Belushi inhabits his character like a genie in a lamp. Somehow he finds a way to make the audience feel as though he is always just about to break into a flurry of karate moves. I'm not going to tell you if he ever unleashes his karate, but I will say that he was born to play this role.

Dance of the hit-persons

The fascinating interaction of a master hit-gentleman and an unsuccessful apprentice hit-man and a self-taught very talented hit-lady. Well worth viewng more than once!

For Kyle Chandler fans only

Being a fan of this film I was highly anticipating getting the DVD release. Unfortunately, for a purist DVD fan like myself, the quality was disappointing. On a scale of one to ten with ten being superb, the picture quality of this DVD was an eight if not a seven. This is a good movie, but I would wait until this is reissued on DVD with a better transfer (and the film is only two years old!!).
