Plot: A middle-aged man finds himself dealing with the divorce of his elderly parents as well as many years of emotional baggage in this poignant comedy drama. Ben (Paul Reiser) is a writer who is enjoying a quiet evening at home with his wife, Rachel (Elizabeth Perkins), when they receive an unexpected visitor, Ben's father, Sam (Peter Falk). As it happens, Sam has some surprising news -- his wife, Muriel (Olympia Dukakis), has left him, leaving behind a note saying she wants some time alone. While Ben gets in touch with his sisters, who immediately set out to track down Muriel, he is left to deal with Sam while he tries to figure out what has gone wrong. Eager to spend some time with his dad to talk things out, Ben invites Sam along for a trip upstate to look at some property he's interested in buying, and as the two men hit the road, they get a chance to get to know one another in a way Sam, a busy salesman, was unable to do when Ben was a boy. The Thing About My Folks was a pet project for Paul Reiser, who wrote the screenplay as well as playing the lead; he'd had the script in the works for 20 years, and always intended for Peter Falk to play the role of Sam. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Amazing Movie
Added 11/4/2009

Endearing story of family - at it's best and it's worst. Falk and Reiser (character: Ben) play father and son brought together on a trip to upstate New York after Falk's (character: Sam) wife leaves a note saying she is leaving him. Over the course of their trip Ben learns a lot about his parents relationship.

The scenery in this movie might be one of the movie's strongest supporting characters! After watching this movie I guarantee that you'll be looking into your next Northeast US Fall tour.

Bottom line: this is a great movie with a great message. I'm 24 and absolutely loved it! My mother is 50 and she loved it too!

The thing about my folks

A funny, yet hart tugging movie that would be good for the whole family. The movie is very well cast with Peter Falk, Paul Reiser and Olympia Dukakis. I am very pleased that I have added this movie to my collection. I give this mopvie 3 & 1/2 stars.

Best thing - Peter Falk
Added 12/28/2007

The best thing about this movie is, of course, Peter Falk, but listening to him argue over and over with his son, always saying the same things, got a bit tedious, and the fart joke wasn't funny after the first time. I was disappointed not to see more of Olympia Dukakis.

Still, an interesting take on relationships, and how we never really know our parents. Worth a look.

Worthwhile

The movie gets to the guts of the tension between a son and a father.

The brilliant dialogue, lovely scenery and great acting serve as an excellent way to present the onion that keeps peeling back layers.

The core issues of parenting, communication and manhood are explored indirectly.

In fun ways the curtain is pulled back, the masks slip off a little and truths are exposed.

All of this happens amidst a road trip format. The backdrop is rural New York state in the early fall just as the trees are changing colors. WOW!
