Plot: Adapted by Horton Foote from his own television play, A Trip to Bountiful is set in 1947 Houston. Forced by circumstances to live her loathsome son (John Heard) and daughter-in-law (Carlin Glynn), elderly Geraldine Page wants nothing more out of life than to return to her home town of Bountiful. Escaping from her family's clutches, Page boards a bus to Bountiful, where she makes the acquaintance of young Rebecca DeMornay. The two women immediately hit it off, and their trip is a most pleasant one. Eventually, sheriff Richard Bradford, ordered to find Page and bring her back to her family, catches up with the old woman just 12 miles from Bountiful. Feeling sorry for Page, Bradford permits her to complete her sentimental journey, even though he knows full well that Bountiful is now a ghost town of empty ruins and dilapidated shacks. It doesn't matter, though: Page sees Bountiful just as it was when she left it, and for the first time in years she is truly happy and at peace with herself. After several near-misses, Geraldine Page finally won an Academy Award for A Trip to Bountiful (incidentally, the original TV production, which still exists in kinescope form, starred Lillian Gish and Eva Marie Saint). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This movie ran at a very slow pace. The story is there, but it takes forever to get there. So many parts of the story are left out or unexplained that it is hard to follow at times. An older woman lives with her grown son and his wife for many many years. But they don't say why she has lived with them for so long. The wife is dominant and mean, but the husband doesn't do anything about it. The mother tries very hard and does everything for the son's wife, but the wife is still unhappy. The wife purposely does mean things to the mother just to have the control and upper hand. The wife lives off of the mothers pension/social security check and waits for it monthly. When she does not get it she gets very angry. The mother is treated like a child and just wants to go visit her old childhood town before she dies. What is the big deal? Take the woman to see the old town already. But it is this big production for her to hop on a bus and make it to the old town. In the end they all agree they should have taken her a long time ago and avoided all of the drama. It really has no story or end. The mother was extremely well at playing her part. She was a very good actress. I believe older auciences would probably enjoy it more.

It was a good movie which caused you to think about how your life could end up that way. It just made you think about getting older and how as you age you wish some things were as they used to be. As you age, you reflect a lot on the past. You hear of friends who have died etc. Lots of things have changed and loved ones etc. have passed away. It causes great sadness and you realize how short your life is.

I am glad she got to go back and see how things had changed. I am glad that she still had good memories of her past. She could live the rest of her life without regret now because she did get to go back. She would have never been happy otherwise.

This movie really touched my heart because I too look back as I have gotten to be a senior citizen.

Very pleased with this movie. Stars Academy Award winner Geraldine Page. The special feature is interesting too. Story about how a little old lady outwits her evil daughter-in-law to go home one last time. Very watchable.
