Plot: Based on the 1934 play by Lillian Hellman, The Children's Hour is set at an exclusive girl's school managed by best friends Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. When student Karen Balkin is punished for one of her many misdeeds, the mean-spirited youngster rushes to her wealthy aunt Fay Bainter, and, randomly choosing a phrase she has undoubtedly read in some magazine, accuses Hepburn and MacLaine of having an unnatural relationship. As Balkin's lies grow in viciousness, the student's parents withdraw their children from the school. Hepburn and MacLaine sue Bainter for libel, only to lose their case when MacLaine's aunt Miriam Hopkins refuses to testify as a character witness. The trial takes its toll on the relationship between Hepburn and her boyfriend James Garner. When Bainter discovers that her niece has been lying, she tries to make amends, but it is too late. Director William Wyler had also helmed the first film version of Children's Hour, 1936's These Three, which due to censorship restrictions of the time did without the lesbian angle (the little girl's accusations involved a supposed romantic triangle between the two ladies and a male friend). Miriam Hopkins, who plays a supporting role in The Children's Hour, originally essayed the Shirley MacLaine role in These Three. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Box office failure for a reason
Added 7/13/2009

How can such a combination of talent, Audrey, Shirley, Wm.Wilder, etc., bomb at the box office? It really isn't much of a wonder when virtually every character lacks likeabilty. James Garner's character, the town doc and fiance of Audrey's character, has a case of "disintegrating backbone" so profound it's almost comical- when acusasions fly that his bride- to- be is accused of having an affair w/ her female business partner. His cowardice is never redeemed -as anyone's character is -even after the truth has been revealed. So we have here a story lacking likeable protagonists, over-the-top antagonists, an extremely morally convoluted storyline, dreariness of surroundings, lack of forgiveness/redemption even when the proper moral correction is made, and a bewildering and questionable ending. Yes, even the brightest and most agile of stars cannot overcome these fatal obstacles.

Fans of DOUBT should find some similarities in this 1961 gem
Added 4/27/2009

This 1961 film based on a play by Lillian Hellman stars Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacClaine as two young women who run a small all girl's boarding school. Their lives are torn apart when a young girl (played with wicked perfection by a young actress named Karen Balkin) spreads a rumor about them being lesbians.

Much like the recent film "DOUBT" this engaging & tight paced drama doesn't so much focus on the sexual aspect of the situation, but it instead focuses on the crushing power of gossip and lies. Even the prejudicial nature of the characters towards homosexuals isn't openly confronted int he film--their actions speak for themselves. This Oscar nominated film just misses that mark of "cinema classic" due to several reasons including some predictable turns for Maclaine's character and one inexplicable "What the heck did she do that for!?!" scene with Hepburn's character and co-star James Garner.

As for the special features, there are none. Unless you're a diehard Hepburn fan and want a complete collection I'd recommend this film as a rental because i found the DVD is a bit pricey ($12 as of this writing) for such a barebones disc.

The only Hepburn/MacLane Pairing on the Silver Screen

James Garner pales against the pairing of these two great stars! Great story - and thought-provoking!
