Plot: Filmmaker Bill Guttentag takes a closer look at the atrocities committed by the Japanese after Nanking fell to the Imperial Japanese Army in 1937 with this documentary that was inspired by Iris Chang's novel {-The Rape of Nanking}. Compiled from over 700 hours of footage including news-reel footage, interviews with survivors and soldiers, and staged readings, Nanking was financed in large by millionaire Ted Leonsis, who had read Chang's obituary and subsequently been prompted to read the author's best-selling account of the massacre. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Kung Fu does not work on Japanese Samurai
Added 10/29/2009

So great to see the truth about martial arts abilities of Chinese instead of hyped up Kung Fu flicks with Chinese heros flying through the air over 100 feet and defeating armies of enemies. Clearly, Chinese military abilities are quiete inferior to the Japanese. When you get bored of watching Kung Fu movies, watch this movie for the truth about military weakness of Chinese and inferiority of Kung Fu.

Terrific documentary

The Bottom Line:

An innovative documentary (though some of its conceits don't entirely work) that thankfully expands its scope beyond talking head interviews and archive footage, Nanking brings the titular 1937 massacre to live in a horrifyingly successful way, illuminating the tragedy while subtly underlining the heroes who stood up to genocide; if you're interested in World War II or documentary film, rent or buy Nanking.

It is a well made film and well presented. However, I have seen a lot more documented photos about women killed after they were raped and the way they were killed. Many of them with their belly slitted open and insides exposed and some with sticks in their private parts. I was and am always puzzled how a civilized people could be so cruel and savage and yet not to have the courage to admit this hideous crime. My only comment about this film is that it should be made to fit reality. It is my sincere gratitude to the Americans and Europeans involved. Without their courageous and selfless actions, people in Nanking would suffer a lot more. Too bad they could not save any P.O.W.s and manage to stop the killing competition.

Excellent film with an unusual format. I never realized the brutality of the Japanese Army when they took Nanking, but it was gruesome. A good film for all, but an excellent film for people who like history.

Very well done. Nanking documents a piece of world history not well known to most, but should be. The docudrama technique of integrating narrators with actual footage does a great job of bringing this story to life. A sad yet uplifting story.
