Plot: A mysterious stranger brings both spiritual comfort and a certain level of distrust to a small community in this drama based on the spiritual best-seller by Joseph Girzone. A mysterious man named Joshua (Tony Goldwyn) arrives in the small Midwestern town of Auburn sometime in the late 19th century. Joshua sets up a carpentry shop in Auburn, and soon develops a reputation for his kind and unselfish nature; after bad weather nearly destroys a church in the town's African-American neighborhood, Joshua offers to help repair the building, and has soon persuaded much of the community to offer their support, including Father Pat (Kurt Fuller), a priest at Auburn's Catholic church. Father Pat's superior, Father Tardone (F. Murray Abraham) is also struck by Joshua's talent, charm, and humble desire to help others, and asks him to carve a new statue of Saint Peter for their church. However, while much of the town is following the good example set by Joshua, when people begin to ascribe supernatural powers to the town's new carpenter, Father Tardone begins to become suspicious, and wants to know who Joshua really is and what he really intends to do in Auburn. Joshua features an original song score by popular contemporary Christian musician Michael W. Smith. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Touching and uplifting message

I loved this movie so much after watching the rented version, I immediately purchased a copy. The lead performances are beautifully done. After watching Tony Goldwyn play Joshua, I can't imagine anyone else in the part and truly got a sense of what it would be like to actually know the man. He underplays the role to perfection with expressions that are stunning in their depth. F. Murray Abraham is wonderful as usual, offering a powerful and subtly nuanced performance. It is not a grand movie by Hollywood standards, but touched me more deeply than any before it. Since I hadn't read the book and didn't know what to expect from the cryptic Netflix description, the movie was something of a revelation. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure was for me. Most of the scenes are very short and there is a lot packed into the 90 minutes. I've picked up more tidbits by rewatching it since some are little more than sound bites, but carry a lot of meaning. Such messages of love and kindness and compassion do my heart good and I can't recommend this movie highly enough. It is not a fancy movie, but it is believable in a gentle, quiet way.

This movie is fluffy and misleading.

I was expecting a christian movie with a good message. I received a christian message with a missed message. The movie has Jesus returning to earth in the form of a man named Joshua. The movie was full of fluff and biblical inaccuracies regarding our Lord and Savior. Needless to say my wife and I were disappointed with this movie.

Perhaps the most underated movie in history

This is a GREAT movie.
Great acting!
Great shots !
Great story from the Joshua series of books which are AWESOME.
Well produced !
.
It has all the things movies in recent hisotry do not:
- A plot that is followed in logical and well developed sequence to conclusion
- Great actors who develop and shape their characters into "beleivable" people.
Every one of them has fatal flaws in themselves and their lives,
but Joshua teahes them to rise above tose foibles and "become".
- Values, principles and a message that enable human dignity instead of degrading it
.
I've watched this movie at least 10 times and lent it and re-bought it as many times.
.
While not everyone will see with my eyes or hear with my ears
to me this is one of the few MUST HAVE movies for a home library.

I loved this video! It was one of those movies that leaves you smiling and satisfied. It seems like current movies are not rated highly unless there is cruelty, violence or sex, or loud rock music. This had none of that and was wonderful in its simplicity and gave a great lesson on basic values, yet was entertaining.
This is a great movie for pre-teens on up.

This movie was entertaining with great performances by the actors. It has an unusual flair, but very thought provoking and uplifting. It could be we entertain angels unaware.
