Plot: Unhappy with her job and her loser boyfriend, Melanie Griffith takes a secretarial post at a major Wall Street firm. Her boss is Sigourney Weaver, an outwardly affable yuppie whose grinning visage hides a wicked and larcenous propensity for exploiting the ideas of her employees. While Weaver is incapacitated, Griffith is compelled by circumstances to pose as her boss. Her inborn business acumen and common sense enable Griffith to rise to the top of New York's financial circles, and along the way she wins the love of executive (Harrison Ford). Things threaten to take a sorry turn when Weaver returns, but it is she who suffers from the consequences of her own past duplicity. Working Girl was Melanie Griffith's breakthrough film, proving than she was more than just the off-and-on significant other of Don Johnson. The film was later adapted into a brief TV series, starring a pre-Speed Sandra Bullock. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Great Movie Great Score
Added 8/27/2009

The great Mike Nichols directed a perfect cast in this top notch romantic comedy with a Women Rights message to boot. Griffith in her best most appealing role ever. Ford is funny, handsome, and charming, what's not to like. The supporting cast is phenomenal, Weaver is dynamite as Griffith's mentor and rival and Cusack is just plain hilarious. The Carly Simon score is inspired.

Romance At It's Best!!

The movie itself had a good story line, with a perfect touch of romance.
I love Harrison Ford and Melanie Grffith, they are perfect together in this movie, not to mention Alec Baldwin, Sigourney Weaver and Joan Cusack.

an office drudge to climber Cinderella story?

This movie is a breaking down the glass ceiling movie about developing a profitable idea, getting it past the dragon lady boss, and finding Prince Charming. A Jersey side secretary puts in the hours, but gets no respect because humble origins; her Jersey boy friend is a "snake"( her words).
This is the 80's resurgence of the American Empire as a romantic comedy.
Actually Melanie Griffith is more than a pretty face her,
but the concept of a climber is not all that new.
Doing an end run around the bad guy ( girl) , she gets the whole deal.

The Bottom Line:

One of the most dated movies I can think of and a thoroughly overrated piece of filmmaking that somehow scored Melanie Griffith an Oscar nomination for her grating, word-by-word line readings, Working Girl is only of interest for people with misguided 80s nostalgia or very strong feminism.

Success
Added 4/12/2009

Melanie Griffith is Tess McGill, a very ambitious secretary, when fortune gives her a once-in-a-liftime break - her boss(Sigourney Weaver), classy but a real pain, breaks a leg while skiing and Tess steps in and takes over her office, her apartment, even her wardrobe. In this guise, she proposes a daring plan to an investment banker(Harrison Ford); this daring proposal will either shoot her right to the top or finish her off for good. You will become enamored with Tess and wish her all the success that she deserves which makes this film always fun.
