Plot: Lilli (Jennifer Elster, who also wrote and directed the film) is unhappy. She's a struggling artist, living in New York City and cynical about everything, including her own talent. Her father (Alan Samulski) is dying, and Lilli barely acknowledges his existence, while her mother (Susan Floyd), clearly divorced from reality, pretends that her husband left town years ago. The trauma of being raised by two junkies and of her parents' eventual breakup still affects all of Lilli's relationships and her view of herself. She's got a group show opening at a major gallery, but she doesn't even know if she wants to attend. One day she meets Morrison (Gale Harold of Showtime's Queer as Folk), an obsessive-compulsive poet who lives in relative luxury but is too afraid of germs to get out of his car when he first tries to talk to Lilli. While he's better off financially, Morrison has his own family problems, as his father (Larry Pine) and mother (Leslie Lyles) are keeping crucial secrets from each other. While they're attracted to each other almost instantly, Lilli and Morrison have a tremendous struggle ahead of them to forge any kind of moderately healthy relationship. Particles of Truth had its world premiere at the {~2003 Tribeca Film Festival}. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Hated this stupid movie!
Added 10/2/2008

I bought this movie 'cause Gale Harold's in it. He is a beautiful man, a wonderful actor, and I was looking forward to seeing him in a different kind of role from his "Queer as Folk" persona.

And, indeed, different he was. And very, very good, too; the best thing about this movie. But that, I'm afraid, is not saying a whole hell of a lot.

"Wake" is slow, monotonous, pedestrian and pointless. All the characters are unlikeable and uninteresting; their dialogue is stilted and insufferable, their relationships forced and farcical. Admittedly, I hate a movie that begins as a story, years in the future with an older version of the main character reminiscing wistfully (often with a typewriter click-clacking away, as they pen their Great American Novel, complete with the requisite autobiographical voice-over). There are notable exceptions to this rule, but by and large, I like a story to begin at the beginning.

In the case of "Wake", however, I wish it hadn't begun at all.

I wonder if this is a gender thing. Like, almost every guy I know loves "The Shawshank Redemption" with a burning passion, and most women I know can take it or leave it. Maybe the brothers of this dysfunctional family resonate somewhere in the masculine breast.... I hated all of them, and couldn't wait for my torment to end.

In short, "Wake" is all kinds of wrong, and I heartily recommend avoiding it if at all possible. (Which, actually, shouldn't be too hard. Just don't buy it!)

Gale Harold, though: a very beautiful man.

Great Gale Harold Film

This is a must watch film for any Gale Harold film.
I didn't really care for Jennifer Elster's character, but every scene they had together were very good.

Not a particle of amusement
Added 8/4/2009

Truthfully, I kept hoping there would be a turning point. It was definitely not an amusing film. Other than watching the actors perform in isolated vignettes as one would watch a Thespian college classroom exercise, the film had nothing to acclaim. The editing was not stellar. Good try by Mr. Harold, but nothing else.

surprising indie movie
Added 5/29/2009

After seeing trailers of this movie I was interested in it. Jennifer Elster and Gale Harold are portraiing two broken characters who are loaded with many problems due to their family background. This movie shows their collision and how they try to overcome their phobias and fears, Jennifer as Lilly, an artist who fears to fail with everything she does and Gale as Morrison, who drives around in his car and spots people to write about them, who tries to manage his germ-phobia, scrubbing his face till excess with soap ( best scenes with a showercap on ;-)) ). In flashbacks we learn about Lilly's past and present and learn that her father is dying of AIDS, worst she could tell Morrison to whom she fell in love. How these two characters get over their fears and phobias it's well placed in this wonderful indie movie. Watch it you'll like it!

Awesome Gale Harold
Added 5/9/2008

As much of his fans, I know Gale Harold from Queer as Folk serie, but this movie is so different. Gale shows us, that he is much more then only Brian Kinney (But I love Brian and Justin of course). All his film are great, he is really very good actor. Shame is, that I have All his films from Amazon. I'm frome Europe, Czech Republic, and nobody here knows him. So many good films I can't buy at home so THX for Amazon. And again, for all Gale's fans: You must see this film is awesome and sweet.

Gale Harold is a great actor!

I became a fan of Gale Harold because of his role as Brian Kinney in the Showtime series "Queer as Folk." In "Particles of Truth", he gives a pretty good performance. The movie is good, though the pace feels a bit slow at times. If you are a fan of Gale and want to see him in something totally different, then check out Particles of Truth.
