Plot: A minor crook finds himself in major peril when a hot weapon goes missing in this violent crime thriller. Joey Gazelle (Paul Walker) is a low-level mechanic in the Mafia who hopes to rise through the ranks by doing whatever is needed. One night, a drug deal goes very wrong when police show up and try to close down the operation; shots break out and a battle ensues, with a pair of of cops meeting a particularly violent fate at bad end of a gun barrel. Joey is given the gun that killed the policemen and is told to make it disappear so it can't be used as evidence; however, before he can do that, the weapon is stolen by Oleg (Cameron Bright), a friend of Joey's young son, who takes the pistol and uses it to shoot his abusive stepfather. Now that the gun is implicated in high profile crimes, it's vitally important that Joey find it as soon as possible, but his search for the firearm is complicated by the fact that Oleg's stepdad is affiliated with a rival gang of Russian mobsters, and that Rydell (Chazz Palminteri), a seriously corrupt police detective, is hot on Joey's trail. Joey's search for the gun takes him through the grim criminal netherworld of the city, where he must face off against nearly every sort of crook, con artist, and deviate that has ever walked the earth. Running Scared is from writer-director Wayne Kramer, who made a name for himself with the well-reviewed independent feature The Cooler. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Excellent Action Packed Thrills and Drama
Added 8/16/2009

Watched this On-Demand on HBO, with no real expectations, while I was working on other things. I was surprised at how well laid out the story was, and how I was drawn in. It is a dark story of a rather unfortunate scumbag Joey played by Paul Walker who is supposed to get rid of a murder weapon. Things go terribly wrong when the neighbor kid (Nick Naylor's kid from Thank You For Smoking) uses the gun to shoot his abusive step-father.

From there it is a frantic chase to get to the kid and the gun. Along the way the Joey's gang, the Russians, a Mexican Poker game, dirty cops, a totally effed up pedophile family, a pimp and much much more,

The colors, imagery, and blurred slow to fast shots really make this movie something different than your average action flick. I would consider watching it again.

So Good, I bought it TWICE !!!!

When I ordered my copy it was driven by Vera Farmiga's presence, and then all the great reviews. After viewing, I knew my son had to see it,and I bought him the apparently already out-of-print Blu Ray version ( looked EVERYWHERE and all I saw were small amounts and VERY high prices, until Amazon Canada ). Knowing my boy, he'll call after watching, and be all revved up !!! Very intense flick that NEVER lets up ! No pussying out whatsoever. GREAT ACTION. And personally, can never get ENOUGH vigilante justice when it comes to the " sick and depraved." As Denis Leary says " time to thin the herd."

And into the rabbit hole we go.

I'm usually not a Paul Walker fan but his performance was on point in this film. This film is packed with twists and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Although I do have to warn, there is a tremendous amount of graphic violence and disturbing scenes that may be unsuitable to some.

Very entertaining movie. Very gritty, sort of has the dirty "children of men" look. Over the top dark comic booky movie.

3 of 5 stars for this action/suspense movie. Lots of high stress action as several people follow the trail of a dirty gun used in the murder of a cop and also used by a boy to shoot his abusive father. A very god movie that will keep your focus from start to end. I do recommend this movie.
