Plot: For their film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, set in the American South during the 1930s, filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen collaborated with musician, songwriter, and producer T-Bone Burnett to compile a score that reflected the rich variety of musical influences of the rural South during the Depression. Burnett brought together a veritable who's who of American roots music for the project, and while the film was a moderate success, the soundtrack album to O Brother, Where Art Thou? was a surprise hit, topping the country charts for several weeks and helping to open the ears of a new audience to the beauty and rough-hewn poetry of bluegrass, traditional country, rural blues, and gospel music. Shortly before the film's release, Burnett assembled many of the artists who appeared on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack for a special concert at Nashville's {~Ryman Auditorium} (the original home of the Grand Ole Opry) to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum; the evening was filmed, and Down From the Mountain documents this very special night of music that celebrates America's musical past as it points to the future. Performers include Emmylou Harris, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Alison Krauss, the Cox Family, the Fairfield Four, the Whites, Chris Thomas King, and Gillian Welch. Holly Hunter, one of the stars of O Brother, makes a cameo appearance, as does noted country music enthusiast Billy Bob Thornton. Songwriter, musician, and historian John Hartford served as master of ceremonies for the concert (and the film); sadly, he died after a long bout with cancer less than two weeks before Down From the Mountain premiered in New York and Nashville in June 2001. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A movie that made the music come forward is celebrated here.
There is a real pentatonic Celtic ( Irish and Welsh) music origin to
the style of banjos, guitars and violins with harmonization, but the American back country has
made up a new culture that is characteristic.
I liked the movie and most of the music.

Interesting, entertaining, and historical

This is a WONDERFUL musical performance and documentary! It would be worth the purchase price, if only to have John Hartford's final video performances. [You know he was a weekly guest on the Glen Campbell, show, and wrote Glen's hit song, "Gentle On My Mind", don't you? :-)] If you enjoyed the movie at all, you'll love meeting the people behind the music, and the music they perform. I only wish (desperately) that I could have seen this production at the auditorium when it was on tour.

Blue & Lonesome

A short review.

This DVD is worth getting just to watch the best version seen or heard of "Blue & Lonesome" with Alison & Dan and the rest of the gang. From the first moment of the mandolin being struck, to the end is a masterful version of this song.

But the main reason to have this DVD is to be able to see the last tour performance of John Hartford. When he plays his fiddle solo it is so striking. He knows and most everyone there knows that he does not have much more time in this world and it comes through strong as he plays the haunting notes.

"Music from the Movie O Brother Where Art Thou?"
Added 10/20/2008

This is an outstanding "Masterpiece" consisting of a documentary of the making of the music in the "O Brother Where Art Thou" movie and in the "Soundtrack" CD to the movie plus an ACTUAL CONCERT OF THIS MUSIC. REMEMBER THIS SOUNDTRACK WAS THE GRAMMY ALBUM OF THE YEAR FOR THE YEAR 2001!!! It was produced by the legendary "roots" producer T.Bone Bunnett.

There have already been plently of reviews on this one, so I won't go into detail. It starts out as a documentary, in Nashville's Famous Rhyman Auditorium , and shows T.Bone Burnett directing the rehersing and sound checks of this music.

The next portion is footage of an actual concert that was performed in the Rhyman Auditorium. The performances range from "Blues" to "Bluegrass" to "Gospel". The MC is "cool", he was introduced in the documentary portion. He is an actual "Tug-Boat" Captain, and does an excellent job of MC"ing the concert.

Some of the performers include: Gillian Welch, Allison Krass and Union Station, EmmyLou Harris, the Fairfield Four (actually 5), The Cox Family, Chris Thomas King (He was actually in the movie and played the role of "Tommy Johnson"), The Peasall Sisters, Ralph Stanley, the Whites, John Hartford, Colin Linden and David Rawlings.

If you like "roots" music or the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou", then I'm sure you'll really enjoy this one. I know I enjoy it very much, and therefore I recommend it.
