As defending champion John Joe (Bernard Hill) gets his local Celtic band ready to compete, his estranged brother, Jimmy (Colm Meaney), blows into town from Liverpool with his own band. John Joe's pianist, Maisie (Charlotte Bradley), isn't happy to see Jimmy, who had left her years ago to raise their daughter, Anne, all by herself. Now the town's star fiddle player, Anne (Andrea Corr of the Irish pop group the Corrs) goes against her mother's wishes in order to seek romance with Jimmy's flute player Teddy (Shaun Evans). The Boys From County Clare was shown at the {~2003 Toronto Film Festival}. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Good movie - I was hoping for great...
Added 11/19/2009

I'm a musician that plays Traditional Irish music (I play whistle, guitar and sing). This movie has the "feel" that I was hoping for, lots of wonderful dry Irish humor, and plenty of good music.

The thing that bothers me is that you would think that a movie that focuses on musicians would at least make an attempt to have the actors look like they're playing their instruments. Time after time, you would see fiddle bows moving out of sync with the music, or fingers on the fingerboard not even moving at all. If it were just a few instances here and there, I wouldn't have minded at all, but it's like they didn't even make an effort...

It was cute!

Is it Oscar-worthy? Not at all. Is it predictable? Absolutely! Is it light-hearted, cute, fun, funny and entertaining? Yep!

Though Andrea Corr's acting was pretty mediocre and some of the scenes were cheesy and predictable, I actually really enjoyed this movie. I'm a huge fan of Irish music, Irish culture, Irish movies, and just the country of Ireland in general, so movies like this are generally right up my alley ("Waking Ned Devine" is one of my all-time favorite movies, for example). This is a cute, lighthearted, feel-good type of film. That's the kind of movie I'm usually in the mood for and this one didn't disappoint.

Like I said before, some of the scenes are corny and some of the acting, in my opinion, is a little questionable at times. It's very predictable and anybody could guess the ending, but at the end of the day this movie is entertaining. There are quite a few funny parts to it that made me chuckle and smile.

I enjoyed it, overall, and will watch it again when I'm in the need for a cute Irish comedy.

Okay if it worked properly

The movie would be good if I could watch it all the way through. Unfortunately the dvd is defective and only works when you start up through scene selections. Admittedly, the dvd format is in a different region to that used in Aus but the dvd does work on one of my dvd players. It will be unlikely that I purchase dvd's from Amazon again.

Excellent Movie for Irish Music Lovers
Added 11/30/2008

I really enjoyed this movie especially since Andrea Corr plays one of the main characters and she is one of the singers in the Corrs music group. The scenery is beautiful Irish countryside. You really get a taste of the culture during that time period. There is not only serious heart felt moments but whitty dry humor. Highly recommended.
