Plot: Auntie Mame began as a novel by Patrick Dennis (aka Ed Fitzgerald), then was adapted into a long-running Broadway play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. This 1958 film version permits Rosalind Russell to recreate her stage role as Mame Dennis, the flamboyant, devil-may-care aunt of young, impressionable Patrick Dennis. Left in Mame's care when his millionaire father drops dead, young Patrick (Jan Handzlik) is quickly indoctrinated into his aunt's philosophy that Life is a banquet--and some poor suckers are starving to death. Social-climbing executor Dwight Babcock (Fred Clark) does his best to raise Patrick as a stuffy American aristocrat, but Mame battles Babcock to allow the boy to be as free-spirited as she is. In 1974, Auntie Mame was remade as the filmmusical Mame with Lucille Ball. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This is great movie I recommend it to anyone who likes old movies.
This movie is far superior to the remake with Lucelle Ball, the humor is not forced it just happens.
Amazom is a great company to order from they usually have what you want and send it out in a timely manner.

This role was made for Rosalind Russell! While always a fan of Lucille Bsll's wrk, this non-musical Rosalilnd Russell version is unbeatable. She inspires in every way, including individuality, laughter, and openeess to the world around us. This version also included an amazing supporting cast, including: the incomparable Peggy Cass (as Agnes Gooch; a young Larry Hagmen, Billie Burke, Forrest Tucker and everyone else around Mame/ Even as a child ( who had my own personal Auntie Mame in my life), I was inspired to "Live!live! Live!"
Thank yu me for showing me, even as a child), that "life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death". It inspired me and still does...in sptie of what anyone thinks. Thanks Patrick and Mame Dennis! If you've nto seen this you are missing out!

This is a wonderful film and has long been one of my favorites. Rosalind Russell gives a classic performance as Mame Dennis in the film version of the play that later was used to create the musical "Mame". The film runs the gamut from wacky comedy to some wonderful pathos as Mame takes over the raising of Patrick, her orphaned nephew. I've always gotten a special kick out of the scenes between the young boy and Mame, they are so well played and have a special magic all their own. More than a few tugs at your heartstrings too. The film is wonderfully scored by Bronislaw Kaper and this edition of the DVD includes a special feature where you can watch the film only with the music, no dialogue. That is just great as far as I am concerned as I think this is a truly fabulous score (overlooked for an Oscar) and it's a treat to hear it by itself. The film was nominated for Best Picture (lost to "Gigi"), Rosalind Russell was nominated for Best Actress (lost to Susan Hayward but Ros did win her third Golden Globe for the role), and the major technical awards in 1958 were swept by "Gigi". The direction is a bit stagebound by todays standards but don't let that stop you from enjoying this marvelously witty comedy with a top notch cast.
