Adapted from Bess Streeter Aldrich’s novel “Miss Bishop,” “Cheers for Miss Bishop” is a sweeping, tragic epic of lost love and missed opportunities spanning the course of nearly fifty years in the life of the eponymous Miss Ella Bishop. In a spellbinding, tour-de-force performance, Martha Scott (“Ben Hur,” “Our Town”) portrays Bishop, a teacher at a small Midwestern college who has endured an inordinate amount of misfortune, including broken engagements, ill-fated extramarital affairs and the untimely deaths of many of her closest friends. Oscar-nominated for its moving score and directed by Tay Garnett (“The Postman Always Rings Twice”), the film also marked the big screen debut of actress Rosemary DeCamp (“Yankee Doodle Dandy”).
