Great film - Lousy DVD quality
Added 3/11/2010
American Graffiti has always been one of my favorite movies; I have absolutely NO critcism of the film. I would rate the movie itself with 5 stars. But... this review is in regard the extremely poor quality of the DVD. I am purplexed that many say the DVD picture qualtiy is good, because that is my major complaint. The scenes are all extremely dark; you can barely see what is going on even after adjusting the light levels on your televison. I played this DVD on a HDTV 50 inch large screen televison - maybe if I played it on an old tube TV the picture quality would have been better?? Also.. as others noted, the sound quality is not as good as the original film. Very disappointing purchase - I expected better picture and sound quality from a DVD.

This film and the Last Picture show capture the feeling of being a
teenager in the late 50's in the right way. And therein lies the difference between
us and the kids who grew up in Europe in the same era. Rock 'n Roll, drive-ins, and drag racing
vs. any notion of serious study. It was a blast, and not much nore.

An American Classic
Added 1/13/2010
The year was 1962. The British Invasion, Rock and Roll and the horrors of Vietnam were just over the horizon. John Kennedy was still president. 1962 was the lull before the storm. American Graffiti brilliantly portrays that brief moment of innocence in American history.
This film kicked off George Lucas's directing career. Every viewing of the film is a revelation. I have seen it many times and have always thought of it as having been filmed in Modesto, Lucas's hometown, but as The Making of American Graffiti, the superb documentary included with this DVD reveals, it was actually filmed in Petaluma. Many acting careers began with this movie, including those of Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard and Harrison Ford. American Graffiti set a precedent for wall to wall music in films, which was copied by many that followed. All the music was selected by Lucas. Be sure to get the soundtrack album, which is on two CDs.
This American classic is worth another viewing, but don't miss The Making of American Graffiti, which is the model for how bonus features should be made. It features interviews of the filmmakers and actors in the film and reveals Lucas's unorthodox casting and directing style. Many takes were filmed and Lucas often kept those where mistakes occurred.

American Graffiti

I remember this film very well and wanted a DVD of it. I wanted the digitally remastered copy, so I bought the DVD version. I was disappointed after viewing the DVD because it appears I bought a second-rate copy of it, or possibly a pirated copy. There are "skips" in several different scenes where if you were watching the VHS version, it appears as if a part was cut out, then the film was spliced back together. I really wanted a first-rate DVD copy of this film but that's not what I got.
I have purchased DVD's from different Amazon vendors in the past, but my satifaction record is mixed - some really great, others very blah.
