Immortal Creation!!!
Added 1/19/2010

I believe this is one of the best films of all time. Sir Chaplin's study of human life, love, pathos, hopes, joy all have been combined here with extreme care and passion. Sound seems irrelevant in the face of hypnotic imagery and masterful acting. Chapters are full of humor which are again wrapped in humane treatment. Hardly this can casually be termed as a comedy. It is too deep for that while on surface a magnificent human drama. The finish is probably one of the most poignant in the history of movie making. A rare masterpiece for all people for all generations of all time. An immortal creation.

Some say Gold Rush was the best Chaplin Film -- obviously, the did not see City Lights.

Poor Quality DVD
Added 8/16/2009

This great movie was ruined for me by this poor quality DVD that, for some reason, featured Chinese subtitles. I will never purchase another product from the sender of this DVD.

Better as romance than slapstick
Added 7/23/2009

The Bottom Line:

A serious film that's marred by some underwhelming scenes of slapstick (though to be honest the boxing scene is really pretty well done), City Lights deserve to be remembered for the wonderfully sweet scenes between the blind woman and the tramp, not the crazy hijinks that ensue for the other half of the film.
