Rosalind Russell stars as Rose Hovik, the ferocious stage mother of two daughters in the age of vaudeville. Her youngest daughter, June, was a talented singer and dancer from an early age while the older girl, Louise, was rather clumsy. Rose dragged the kids around the country for performances in the rapidly dwindling vaudeville theatres with the help of friend and manager Herbie (Karl Malden). When June grew frustrated with the act and left, Louise became the star and, quite by accident, the queen of burlesque.

Rosalind Russell is a force to be reckoned with as the brash, indomitable Rose. She sings many memorable songs and runs the gamut from slapstick humor to heartbreaking tragedy. Karl Malden is wonderfully sympathetic as Herbie, the man who loves Rose. Natalie Wood is lovely as the adult Louise who, as Gypsy Rose Lee, became a famous stripper and sometimes actress.

The sets are often stagy but there are terrific performances and spirited, singable songs. It's raucous and glamorous; highly recommended.

How Do you like them eggrolls Mr Goldstone?

I throughly enjoyed this movie! It is one of Miss Russells finest performances as the overbearing stage mother who initailly has her eye on the wrogg daughter for show business success. Thru an act of fate though the success she had sought is finally at hand.

No Introductions Necessary
Added 10/2/2009

Gypsy needs no introductions! This classic is fabulous for young or olde; olde fans and newcomers. A musical extravaganza based (loosely) on the life of notorious stripper Gypsy Rose Lee adapted from the celebrated play. The film is really a mother/daughter struggle where the mother's dreams are lived through her children. When the child that "Mama" pins all of her dreams on leaves the act she has no choice but to continue her pursuit by attaching them to her other daughter. This daughter's talents and charms are severely lacking and it seems failure is immenent until one purformance changes her life for ever. The cast includes Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden. A superior job by all! While not even remotely graphic by today's standards some parents may still want to exercise caution where smaller children are concerned as some subjects are mature.

sparkling new reissue of "Gypsy" with one drawback...
Added 7/11/2009

This new remastered print of GYPSY is only available as part of Warner's Natalie Wood Collection DVD boxset (along with "Sex and the Single Girl", "Bombers B-52", "Cash McCall", "Inside Daisy Clover" and a revised print of "Splendor in the Grass").

Owning the original Warner DVD pressing for GYPSY as well, I've compared the old print with this new one, and can confirm that the image looks sharper and clearer on the new DVD, with beautifully-saturated colours evidently struck from a pristinely refurbished element. Sadly though, the audio on the new DVD has been condensed into a 1-track mono mix (the original DVD had a full 5.1 surround track). This seems to be the standard practice used for the bulk of Warner's classic releases in recent years, whether the movies are in stereo or not.

Apart from the addition of a cartoon featurette ("The Pied Piper of Guadalupe"), the extras are the same on both discs and the lure of upgrading won't be powerful unless you're interested in the other Natalie Wood Collection titles and take this disc as a sort of 'bonus'. Buy the new disc but also keep hold of the old one (if you really care about the soundtrack).

I was excited to get Gypsy because I hadn't seen it in over 10 years! I received it within 3 days and I watched it right away. It was in great condition and still the great movie I remember it to be. That's all I have to say and now I'm going to go watch it again. Have a good one!
