Plot: On a deserted back road in Alabama, Jack and Stephanie find themselves driving fast and running late. Their world suddenly changes when a strange accident leaves them stranded with no car, no cell phone coverage, and no help in sight. They have no choice except to continue on foot. As darkness approaches, they round a bend and see a small sign at the top of a long gravel driveway: The Wayside Inn. The exhausted couple stands in front of an inviting house, complete with gated stone wall, ancient oak trees, and a note welcoming weary travelers. Inside they find another couple with an equally troubling story about a similar accident. It seems that backwoods pranksters have made their day miserable. Still, they are safe 0r so they think.

Pretty Scary

I read the book, which I enjoyed more than the movie. The movie is very scary.

It Was NOT Like The Book!!
Added 11/22/2009

So... I read the book and thought it was EXTREMELY good. I got all excited once I found out that there was movie out. I mean, honestly... what could be better, right? The best book ever put to action?
Wrong.
This movie sucked beyond anything. It was NOTHING like the book. And when I say nothing, I mean NOTHING. They took out MAJOR parts, added new ones... the ending was all screwed up... I can't even explain it. the dining room scene, the boiler room scene, the end where they are all upstairs and they have to kill each other, Stephanie being locked in a clostet... it is ALL messed up beyond belief.
Do NOT watch this film if you've seen the book. You will regret it big time.

Too fast and confusing to be scary, almost boring.

Honestly, how many times can Hollywood recycle classic, superficial 'scare scenes' and still expect viewers to be on the edge of their seat? The start of the movie is easy to follow and somewhat entertaining but progresses into a tightly wound blur all the way to the end.

Joe Goodman, Bobby Neutz, Ralph Winter, Robby Henson do you think the viewers really care about these characters enough to care about the outcome of the movie? Take a lesson from Spiderman or Forest Gump. I could not find 1 lead character in this movie I cared about. Yes, this kind of movie needs this kind of character. Even if there was such a character, there may be too many chaotic, magical things going on to keep track of or care about what happens next.

It's like, BAM!, in your face, this is what's up with this character, this is your only chance to remember, gotta move on, ain't got time to bleed (cuz we gotta get this movie out if we wanna get paid).

2 stars for okay special effects and a somewhat original theme for a 'haunted house' and the experiences the characters have while visiting.

Grade: D

A Christian Horror Movie is an Oxymoron.
Added 10/27/2009

After having watched a good number of these Frank Peretti type Christian "horror" flicks (Thr3e, Hangmans Curse, The Visitation, Last Sin Eater, Exorcism of Emily Rose, etc.) over the years in an attempt to find a Christian movie that is scary and/or good enough to keep the attention of todays Christian youth for a Fall Harvest party, I've come to the conclusion that none of these movies measure up.

Maybe these types of movies would have been scary in the 50's, but since most of us have already been desensitized as a result of being exposed to movies that almost make us have to change our pants after watching them, and because Christians are fairly limited in what they can show as far as gore and really frightening scenes, these types of movies tend to collapse on themselves and leave us saying "what's the point" after it's over. The only choice left for a movie in this vain to be successful is that it must have some good "jump" scenes sprinkled throughout and at the very least a good story line. Unfortunately, this movie has neither, which consequently causes it to be as one reviewer put it "mildy entertaining."

I've received positive feedback from kids about the movies "Invisible Enemies Among Us" and "Hangman's Curse", but even those movies can't really be called scary. This movie wasn't even close to being scary, and the storyline was so convoluted and just plain dumb, I had a hard time making it all the way to the end. There's not even much here that you can use to have a discussion about afterwards. I mean let's be serious. A guy standing outside the door with a gun in his hand is just not that scary to me. Now if he was really ugly like Freddy, or indestructable like Jason, maybe it would be a different story. But towards the end I was like why don't you just shoot the guy and get the movie over with?

At least the movie starts making a little bit of sense towards the end, but unfortunately it still gives the wrong impression that there are second chances after death. And although they did mention the light, the movie made no attempt to identify who that light is. By doing these things, to me the movie becomes pointless as a Christian movie because it has no redemptive value. Overall I'd say that this movie wasn't terrible, but it wasn't that good either.
