One of the greatest movies about the Arab world
Added 3/6/2010
I can't believe the bias and hatred shown even in 1981 by the NY Times. The commentator didnt hesitate to kill the film. This is a great movie that shows Arabs in a true light during that specific time period in Libya. Had it been about another religious or ethnic tragedy, the media wouldnt have dared say it was a "bad" movie. Point blank, its an underrated, very solid film with good to great acting. The special effects are great from that time period. This is a must see on my movie list.... This is about the terror inflicted on the region by European invaders and the noble but inept response of the Arabs.
Anthony quinn's characater shows the true teachings of Arabs and Muslims in much of the region.

good movie

I recently upgraded from the VHS version to DVD. Lion of The Desert gives the viewers a brief history of Libyans' resistance against Italian colonial rule during the early twentieth century, from the perspectives of Omar Mukhtar, one of the major resistance leaders, played by Anthony Quinn, who bears a striking physical resemblence to Mukhtar, and Rodolfo Graziani, the Italian general determined to crush the rebellion, played Oliver Reed. The picture and sound qualities are sharp and clear, and the battle scenes are well portrayed and planned, even the Italian rifles, machine guns, tanks, etc., are detailed replicas of the originals. My only disappointment is the paucity of bonus materials, only a "making of" feature, transferred from the VHS edition, and commentary by the director/producer are available. For a twnenty fifth anniversary DVD, at least subtitles and theaterical trialers should have been included too. Oddly, trailers are available on the VHS version.

This movie is beautiful. It's a true story and that's why I love it. The actors were great in that movie. The great director Mustapha Akkad made a smart choice by chosing a great stars like Anthony Quinn to play as the great Libyan leader, Omar Mukhtar. Also he chosed another great actor, Oliver Reed to play the fascist Italian General Graziani. Generally the whole work is great, and it deserves two thumbs up !!

Thanks Jeff

Thanks Jeff Shannon for the spectacularly tasteless editorializing. This film was recommended to me by a dear friend whose taste in films is impeccable, and judging by the user reviews (5 stars from the overwhelming majority), the film has its merits.
There are a lot of good things to mention about this film, but instead you simply drone on about how vaguely crappy the movie is if not for any other reason than it was produced by some icky foreigner from Africa and that the lead actor looks like a Muslim. You implicitly describe Muslims as shaggy--as one would describe a dog. Disgustingly ignorant comments like that ought to cost you your job.
Next time spare us your xenophobic hackery and go write a review of some Hollywood film that isn't an affront to your European sensibilities. I've seen better reviews given to much of the mindless drivel that constitutes the American filmscape, whereas this film competes in a totally different arena.
Please Amazon, give us a competent review!
