A unjustly-overlooked little masterpiece...
Added 3/2/2010
This is one of the best movies that hardly anyone has ever seen, or so it seems... It is a wonderful character study and love affair with Scotland, and has one of my all-time favorite soundtracks by the great Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits [they played "Ballad of the Local Hero" during the Brothers in Arms tour back in the 80s, much to my delight at the time].
It's the story of Texas yuppie sent to buy a village in Scotland so his company can build a refinery there, and how the locals and the land seduce him away from his mission, and how that mission evolves. Riegert is understated and very effective, and Lancaster is an absolute hoot as the crazy CEO.

Simply Wonderful
Added 2/24/2010
I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it on some movie channel or other in 1991 when I was twelve. I don't remember any of the other details but the movie stuck with me. It wasn't until it came out on DVD that I saw it again and for once my childhood memories remained intact. This movie holds up in so many ways: the setting and how the cinematography caught it, the subtle humor, the acting. Everything. Do yourselves a favor and order it now.

Al Gore's Favorite Film!
Added 2/18/2010
Dispite being Al "THE SKY IS FALLING" Gore's favorite film, I give this little gem Five Stars*****! The film is quirky, ingnious, and above all beautiful. Even the music is great! This is absolutely my favorite Bill Forsyth film. In fact it is in my favorite top ten films of all time. Some folks get it and some don't, I am told. I don't know if I am one of the chosen ones who "get it" since I am not a knee jerk progressive liberal fool, tool or fellow traveller. However, I just love the film. God Bless Burt Lancaster's soul.

I bought it for Mark Knopfler's music really. LOL The movie is 3 stars at best. Kind of strange.

Thank you Amazon

I saw this movie many years ago and loved it. I searched local video stores in the hopes of seeing it again but to no avail. I took a chance and looked for it on Amazon and BINGO, there it was. It was sent to me in a timely manner and the price was just a little over what the rental fee would have been at a video store. It's a great little movie and I've already watched it twice and I'm sure I'll watch it more throughout the years. Thank you Amazon.
