The contrast between kind, thoughtful characters and those only interested in money and appearance
Added 3/20/2010
The romance, of course, is the main thing, and as usual in a Jane Austen novel, good triumphs!
There was so much else to enjoy in Persuasion, particularly the contrast between characters who were interested only in money, prestige, and appearance and those who were more "clever" and thoughtful.
Great moments for me included when Ann's father, who had mirrors placed everywhere so he could admire himself, critiqued every person he saw, man or woman, determining, and announcing, whether he would be 'seen' in public with them. He didn't seem to approve of Ann's appearance and gave her a long lecture on what kind of face cream she should use. Another truly great conversation was when the Admiral started almost every sentence saying there was absolutely nothing he would want to change about the home he was leasing. The next sentence would be complaints about it, until is gracious wife would remind him that those things never needed to be mentioned.
It isn't possible for a Jane Austen fan to be very much disappointed in one of her novels, even the movie version. I have too many Jane Austen favorites. This is one of them.
Does anyone else notice that their speech has been altered after reading these novels or watching the videos? :)

This is one of the greatest Austen adaptations ever. Filled with faithful depictions of the Austen scenes. And wonderful tension between the romantic leads.

Over and over again

I've watched this DVD twenty times, at least, and I do not grow tired of it. The scenes are delightful - the houses, landscapes, seascapes, the interior scenes, candlelit dinners - watching these is like walking through a gallery of fine art. The movie is very well cast. The characters in this novel are subtle and complex, and, while an hour and a half of film is too little to capture everything, the actors do a fine job in portraying nuance of feeling and understanding. It is said that we are to occupy ourselves with those things that are pure and noble and of good report. This DVD is certainly one of those things.

I love all these movies. I also love the fact that you don't have to leave your house to
rent a video.

blah blah blah...

I made the mistake of buying this movie without having seen it first. After forcing myself to sit through the first 30 minutes, I had to turn it off. Granted, I have not read the book so I cannot compare the two. However, this is an excruciatingly boring movie. I don't think even A-list actors could have saved this screenplay. This DVD went straight to the trash can.
