Incredible

Not only is this one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, but the whole thing is more than dance...it's a lesson in diversity. The dancing is absolutely unbelievable, so pure and spontaneous. This ain't your boy band dancing! But the people here live this life for real. They live in a scary situation surrounded by life's cruel realities. Some of them dress and give off the appearance that might intimidate you - that would make you want to cross the street to avoid them, but then you find out they are responsible, loving, church-going people who just want to dance and stay away from the gangs. This movie can make you open your eyes to the incredible talents of youth, but also to your own discriminatory tendencies. I think everyone should watch this. Great stuff.

A mind altering experience

I am not much of a hip-hop fan and typically detest rap. I would probably have a prejudice against the young people depicted in this film if I had just encountered them on the street. But this film opened my eyes to see some things in a new light.
I had heard of RIZE when it first appeared in the theatres a few years back and garnered favorable reviews. I decided then that this was a film that should at least be checked out. I'm glad I did.
Director David Chapelle does an excellent job of compiling a historic overview of the subject matter, a look at what the subject matter is about, and the people involved. Getting to "know" these young people is indeed an honor and an uplifting experience. My expectations about what I was going to experience in the viewing of this film were blown away and I was completely taken by surprise by how the film ended up. The positive message conveyed by this film is one that gives me hope and elation. I highly recommend this film for all to see, especially the young people who can more greatly appreciate the musical styles the provide the background for most of the action of the film. I don't want to say too much about the film other than it is a film about young people faced with some truly difficult challenges in their lives who find a positive creative outlet through dance. But believe me the film is also about much more than that. A wonderful documentary! See it, see it, see it!

What better way to understand krumping and clowning, then to go to South Central LA, to Tommy the Clown's academy, where it all started? Great insight, great dancing. It was just great.

this is one of the great dance movies of the last like 15 years in my opinion. it shows how dance can really affect a people and keep people out of trouble. it shows the relation between old and new, religion, spirituality, and so much more. it hits home for me. i grew in the era of battles and dance offs. but being from the city of chicago we didnt krump or clown it was all about the foot work. a high intensity, very fast dance the was based on quick and sharp movements of the feet and legs. a good example is the video for the song "watch my feet". and if the dancing dosent get u interested the hard bodies of the great dancers will!
