Horrible picture quality
Added 3/13/2010

This is one of these poor quality picture transfers to DVD. For excellent quality purchase the European Region 2 version.

Not quite what I was looking for
Added 1/9/2010

I read a few reviews saying this was one of the best Holocaust movies ever, maybe even better than Schindler's List so I went for it and bought it to show in school when I taught the Holocaust...there were only about 30-40 minutes in the whole movie worth showing my class. The bonus features were decent. The movie itself is good but if you're looking for an excellent Holocaust movie you might want to keep looking or stick to the classics.

Horror Movie.

R. Penola asks "You will continue to wonder, long after the haunting images of Sophie's face fade from view, what might you have done in her shoes?"

I will tell you instantly what I would have done. With regard to the "choice" she made in the pivotal scene, when she opted to save her son, (and possibly herself) by throwing her toddler-in-arms to the lions and becoming the German officer's whore. If I had made that decision, (which I am sure I would not) I would have tried to survive for the sake of my son, as Sophie did, but then when I realized that he was dead also, I would have committed suicide.

At the time of the decision I would have made a dash for it, thereby assuring that all three of us would die together. But then there would have been no story. It was her troubled conscience that kept the story going, and the way she wasted what was left of her miserable life in the pursuit of selfish pleasures in the company of a madman.

The narrator was completely inadequate both in his own life, in his relation to Sophie, and apparently as a lover, but he alone had been trusted with the secret, so only he could tell, and like the Father Confessor of Mother Teresa's secret could not be trusted to keep it in the end.

Altogether a harrowing long drawn out play with little to redeem it except the exceptional acting.

Worthy mentions, apart from the three main actors mentioned many times before, should go to the German officer who gave Sophie "the choice", he was so good he sent shivers down my spine. Handsome, cold, and very lethal. The actor, (whose name I do not know) took his part extremely well. The other mention is to Sophie's daughter with her little trembling lip and her terrified look. How did they do that?

A Film Worth Seeing Many Times

The story has tragic elemtnts, tremendous acting by all, especially Meryl Streep, told by flashback technique from the present. This movie is rated surely as a film classic.
