Another movie I was wandering about. Movie is narrated in English, so it can be distracting when watching it.

This movie is timeless...
Added 1/27/2010

I first watched this movie when I was a teenager and I had loved it since. It has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Some might consider this movie to be porn, but it really isn't...its a story about love and young womans young life. I won't spoil the movie, but if you enjoy love stories that truly have a meaning, then you will love this story. Bonus: this movie is based on a book (and real events)...so its just not some made up plot. I have yet to read the book, but I have always wanted to--I bet its as good as the movie. This movie is definitely for a more intellectual and mature audience. Once you watch this, you will always remember it--look at me: I'm still bragging about it 18 YEARS LATER!

The most romantic artistic project of this original director!

Jean Jacques Anaud is a very talented director. Since his debut in 1977 with "Black and white in colors" and his cult movie "The war of fire", we were aware about him. He was the responsible for bringing us the notable cinematographic adaptation of "The name of the rose". That's why one wonders oneself about his unlimited magic. "The lover" is a film based on Marguerite Duras' novel, and portraits the memories of a teenager who meets a Chinese and wealthy dandy. Impacted and dazzled by his elegance and good manners, tired of her problematic familiar nucleus, impoverished by external affairs and wishful to experience new sensations, becomes his mistress.

Although the film is slow-paced, it has intense moments, perhaps due the fact the handle of the narrative time doesn't fit with the time in the cinema. Sometimes reiterative and rhetorical, we will witness the imminent fatality that waits for them when the cultural, economic and social appears as an insurmountable barrier.

An original item among your invaluable collection.

Beautiful.

As with the book, this movie is hauntingly beautiful and it is the story of a young school girl with a rocky family life who becomes the lover of an older man. But don't just watch it for the story, watch it because it is filmed so beautiful, and the best way I can decribe it is this; sweaty. I can't recommend this one enough. Also, read the book: The Lover.

I am most surprised by what some stupid people will write, about a wonderful story. IF it is a true story, I have no idea, but I do remember what it was like being 15 1/2 and being confused by what my body was telling me, and Jane March, did a super job in this movie. "Soft porn"? Well, okay, it has some sex in it, but the story line is so good. It's about a poor trash white girl, who falls in love with a older rich "Chinese" man. She doesn't even realize she is in love, yet she is at the end, yet she STILL can't admit it to her self. He is a rich "Chinese man" who tells her in the beginning that he doesn't want to do this, because he could fall in love with her. Forbidden love is always the best love. Yet, this love is ever lasting. The scenery is beautiful. Awesome photography, beautiful flowing music. At first, I wasn't too sure of this movie, but as I got lost in the story, I was so sorry it ended the way it did. It had no other way of ending! Chinese men with white women, was only for men with whores. White women, with Chinese men, was only for the money. How CAN a movie such as this, end any other way? Even in France, racial mixes such as this weren't allowed. There was no were for this couple to go. She (the girl) couldn't tell even her family the truth, and while he (the Chinese man) tried to tell his Father, he HAD to marry of Chinese decent. What a sad love story. It's so sad, that more people couldn't see that in the USA. Simply a SUPER movie.

As a huge (and very new) Bruce Willis fan I had to watch this movie as it has gone down in history as being one of his most (in)famous roles ever. In this film Bruce is a group therapist on a quest to find a macabre killer who he suspects is a patient. Along the way he meets a trampy young girl (the very talented Jane March) that only manages to complicate matters.

The overall story and the pace of the movie (after the first 35 minutes which moved like sand in an hourglass) was very strong. I enjoyed learning about all of the members of the group. They were all a bunch of oddballs. It's hard to say which was the most screwed up or who had the most issues.

Ritchie was the most interesting to watch because although he was the youngest member of the group it was fairly apparent that he had been through something very shocking. Although she wasn't a member of the group sessions, I also thought that Bonnie added a lot to the overall story. Even though she was only in a couple of short scenes she somehow still always managed to pull the rug out from under Sondra.

The movie ends with a surprise that no one could have seen coming because even though the story built up to it the ending still managed to remain a total surprise. Bruce was just fine in this movie, however I thought that perhaps his talents were a touch overused and overstated. Perhaps he would have been better suited as the police detective.

I did think the movie was a little on the long side (over 2 hours). The love making and nudity was also rather excessive. Frankly, I do not want to see my movie stars undress because it leaves nothing to the imagination. It's also rather anticlimactic and just boring to watch. The DVD does not include anything besides the trailer. The lightening, picture quality and overall sound leaves a lot to be desired.

Overall I give this movie 4.5 stars. "Color of Night" is probably one of the best mystery style suspense movies that came out during the '90s, because unlike the gaggle of other films, this one is both creative, wonderfully directed and includes a strong supporting cast.

Great Willis!
Added 2/16/2010

Bruce Willis is known to younger movie-goers as that middle-aged bald-headed guy who makes action movies. They should take a gander at Willis in this l994 nail-biter. He's never looked more sizzling, sexy and gorgeous as a psychologist trying to track down a serial killer--who might be one of his own patients.

Willis proves what a terrific movie star he is when the camera photographs just his face--and just using his eyes, facial expression and mouth he conveys volumes of emotions--from blazing sexualty to pathos to bitterness.

Some reviewers say that this DVD has full frontal shots of Willis naked but in the version I just watched, you barely see his nude tush and just a bare glimpse of a very partial front glimpse of genitalia.

Which brings me the point to this case of blatant gende bias: Jane March is very nude in several scenes--but Willis is always covered up with not even a rear shot. You see more on cable TV these days.

Anyway, this was the big selling point when this movie came out and flopped--Bruce Willi in the nude! It can be enjoyed by today's movie buffs as a fascinatng excursion into the underworld of sexual payshopothia.

Terrible thriller you don't need to see

The Bottom Line:

Far too long and stupid to even pass as "so bad it's good" entertainment, the only thing Color of Night has going for it is a ton of nudity, but even that can't keep viewer interest for long; all things considered, this is a dumb, boring film which has been rightfully forgotten by time and needn't be seen by anyone.
