"The Missing Person"
Loneliness and Loss
Amos Lassen
John Rosow is a private detective who is hired to follow a man on a train from Chicago to Los Angeles. Gradually he learns about the man and uncovers his identity as a missing person and as one of the thousands thought to be dead after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Rosow has been offered a large reward to bring the man back to his wife in New York City.
This is a movie that is driven by its actors--it is a simple plot which is simply shot and is romantic, quiet and sincere. It is a film about loneliness and of course this makes it sound like a downer which it is everything but. Michael Shannon as the detective is marvelous and the fact that the film is so simple allows him to really shine in the role.
Director Noah Buschel gives us something new and fresh in this innovative film. It is a film noir in which everything happens in a very ordinary and everyday ways. The film is low key and that is deliberate. Buschel seems to be reinventing the film noir with this and does a fine job. The plot is filled with surprises and revelations but it is Michael Shannon that makes this movie what it is. There is something irresistible about this movie and even if the film does not completely rise to its ambitions, it is still a treat to see Shannon.
