4.5 Stars...Great Romance
Added 1/23/2010

I love this movie, it is one of my favorites...good characters, good- even if a bit strange- story, and of course great romance! So why do I give it 4.5 stars instead of 5 stars? For two reasons:

Reason one (I will step on my soapbox here for a moment, so bear with me lol):
I didn't like the heroine smoking, she was a very likable and sweet character, so I found the smoking to be out of character for her and also completely uneccessary to the story. And still if it was just that, I wouldn't have mentioned it, but she doesn't just smoke, but she also has a smoking vending machine in the diner where she works as a waitress, so that makes it just off-putting. Now if this were an oldie, I wouldn't have minded because back then they most probably didn't know about the very harmful effects of smoking, but when I'm watching a modern day movie I expect better concerning this (now I'm getting off my soapbox).

But the good thing is that we only see the heroine smoking once in the beginning of the movie, or maybe twice maximum and that's it. And the vending machine is only mentioned once at the beginning of the movie or twice, and then all but forgotten as the story progresses. But still I felt a need to get this off my chest, because I really enjoyed this movie.

Reason two: I felt that while the ending was moving and fitting, it was sort of abrupt...

In the end, I love this movie overall, it is so endearingly romantic and memorable.

The Best Most Realistic Love Story Of All Time
Added 11/6/2009

My mother bought me this movie for my 15th birthday back in 1994 and the moment I discovered the story and Marisa Tomei and Christian Slater's Chemistry in this movie I was totally and utterly hooked. Tomei and Slater give the most sublime chemistry together ever in such a tender hearted love story that I have ever seen in any romantic movie. No other love story can tops this realistic romance and loving chemistry between these two characters portrayed by Tomei and Slater. Slater is every woman's dream man in this movie. So gentle, charming and heroic, what woman wouldn't fall for Slater's characer in this film. (The way he secretly follows her in the shadows to protect her, beats to a pulp any thug who messes with her and carries her to safety and stays by her side to make sure she is ok).The story and its characters are completely and undeniably touching, moving and beautiful. Slater's Adam is such a rare knight in shining armor that you don't find in everyday life unless you are blessed with that certain lucky fate to find him and have him find you. This movie will certainly move your heart and spirits in a way that no other love story can. It most definitely is a moonbeam of a love story. Go buy yourself a copy today and see for yourself and I think you will absolutely agree.

ONE OF THE BEST ROMANCES IN SEVERAL DECADES
Added 10/8/2009

Christian Slater was never better than in this quietly moving little romance, and Marisa Tomei was simply wonderful as an unlucky-in-love waitress that is the object of his affections. Rosie Perez in a fine supporting role lends some spice to this sweet ( though not pathetically, syrupy ) tear-jerker, and helps to lighten the mood of the film. I am on my third incarnation of this warmly delicious, seldom predictable, unpretentious, and amazingly effective love story.

The chemistry between Tomei, and Slater is palpable, the character's are quirky, funny, and often poignant.

Disappointed
Added 5/29/2009

I was very disappointed when I sat down to watch the VHS that I purchased. The VHS was advertised as "very good," but right after the movie started playing the tracking was all messed up and we couldn't fix it. We couldn't watch it. I'm very disappointed. When we received it, it wasn't rewound and the box was all beat up.

Bittersweet love story with plenty of heart.
Added 5/16/2009

Couldn't resist the pun there:) This is an old-time bittersweet love story that tugs at one's heartstrings. Marisa Tomei plays waitress Caroline, who can't seem to find a nice guy. The ones she does date are jerks, using her as one-night stands, and she can't fathom why she's treated so badly. One night, one her way home from work, Carolina is attacked by two guys who had earlier met her at the diner she works in - fortunately, Adam the busboy from the diner [Christian Slater] happens along and rescues her.

Adam is a bit of a recluse - he hardly ever speaks, and maintains a low profile at the diner. Initially Caroline keeps her distance from him, but eventually gets drawn to Adam's sweet and vulnerable disposition and discovers that Adam is drawn to her too. Thus two rather emotionally stunted people reach out to each other and find a real connection that transcends everything else. However [as in many classic love stories], the pair's happiness is threatened by outside factors beyond their control and the rest of the movie deals with this.

I felt that Marisa Tomei's performance as the emotionally vulnerable Caroline was spot-on, eliciting one's sympathy whilst also being frustrated by her lack of real goals in life. Christian Slater [who also delivered a compelling performance in "Bed of Roses"] is subtle and credible in his portrayal as the quiet and unassuming Adam who has spent the greater part of his life hiding his true emotions, but whose love for Caroline [and her love for him], brings him alive. The leads are convincing in their roles and the chemistry between the pair is credible too. Speaking of performances, Rosie Perez delivers a good turn as Caroline's sharp-tongued fellow waitress and best friend.

"Untamed Heart" is a bitterweet love story that will appeal to fans of romance dramas.
