Fantastic remake!
Added 3/21/2010

Willard Stiles (Crispin Glover) is the son of a wealthy dead factory owner which is now ran by a friend of the family named Mr. Martin (R. Lee Ermy) and has a sickly mother (Jackie Burroughs). He is a very lonely worker of a man until one day he saves a white rat as he starts to have an obsession with rats to train them what to do including one large rat nicknamed Ben which he dubbed. Now it seems that he is using them as a weapon for his anger and revenge against the people who like to push him as he is falling out of his mind.

A truly excellent remake of 1971's cult classic is one of the best yet underrated remakes in recent memory of the horror genre. Glen Morgan (Final Destination) fame was at his peak when he did this re-envisioning of one of the most underrated movies. The casting was perfect including Crispin Glover taking over the role of Willard originally played by Bruce Davidson and i also like how they made a tribute to that movie with this one using references of Bruce Davidson in a painting as the dead father of the title troubled figure. This one deals with the madness of being lonely and the obsession of certain animals can lead to certain dangers that could drive you mad.

This DVD offers both widescreen and fullscreen versions with audio commentary, alternate and deleted scenes with optional commentary, a documentary, featurette, music video by Crispin Glover singing Michael Jackson's famed "BEN" song with optional commentary, Trailer, TV Spots and DVD-Rom features.

A Man and his Mouse

What can I say about this movie other than "I love it"? Glover's superb acting made me genuinely feel his emotions. As with most of his characters, once you see how pathetic and sad he is, you just want to hug him. Though rats are definitely creepy, I wouldn't call this a horror film. I really don't know what kind of genre it fits in, but I do know that it still makes me cry every time I watch it. If you love characters that you can truly sympathize with and a bit of mouse love, then this is the movie for you. Also, if you're a Crispin Glover fan anyway, check this out; if you like his other work, you'll definitely love this.

Williard is a Brillant movie. I didn't like the cat getting by the rats, but an overall good movie. The office guy Frank Martin, he played in Texas Chain Saw Massacre. This man is Excellent in everything he's ever done. He is abrillant Actor! A super movie for thriller buffs. Erleen

Terrible film
Added 1/9/2009

I have seen over 800 films in my day, and this by far was one of the worst. The movie was actually so bad that it prompted me to write my first negative review on Amazon. From the other reviews, you should have gotten a synopsis of the film. Now I didn't know that this film was a remake, it might have been a great movie during that era but for the generation that grew up on the likes of Fight Club, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smokin Barrels, this take-it-to-the-man story just doesn't mean much. It's simply just creepy. I'd give it one star if the performance of Crispin Glover didn't make this film a bit less dull. Whatever metaphors, allegories or themes the film was suppose to invoke seemed to be completely overshadowed by the mere creepy factor that is this film. I bought this film (used) for one dollar, and it is so bad that I don't want to even keep it in my collection, I'm simply going to put it back where I got it.
