Description: Welcome to the terrifying Melbourne crime underworld, where tensions are on the brink of exploding between felons and renegade cops - the Wild West played out on the city's streets in broad daylight. The Cody brothers, a gang of armed robbers, are in the process of initiating their teenage nephew Joshua 'J' (James Frecheville) into their frightening world after the death of his mother and under the watchful eye of his matriarchal grandmother, Smurf (Jacki Weaver), a modern-day Ma Barker. Ben Mendelsohn plays Pope, the oldest brother of the Cody clan, who tries unsuccessfully to come to terms with the fact that his partner and best friend, Barry 'Baz' Brown (Joel Edgerton), wants out of the game. Craig (Sullivan Stapleton), the middle brother with a hair trigger, deals and does cocaine while the youngest brother Darren (Luke Ford) fights with his conscience as he participates in the family business. All of them are adored, sustained and supported by Smurf, who seems to be pulling the strings. J quickly comes to believe that he is a player in this world, but soon discovers that the entire situation is far larger and more menacing than he could ever imagine. Guy Pearce plays senior police officer Nathan Leckie, who, recognizing that J's youth and inexperience might well prove to be the key to finally conquering the Codys, tries to lure him into the fold after the death of a close associate. In order to survive, J must determine how the game is played and choose his place in this cunning and brutal animal kingdom.

Guy Pearce Talks LOCKOUT and Possible Sequel, PROMETHEUS, LAWLESS, and Untitled Drake Doremus Project

In films as wide-ranging and diverse as Memento, L.A. Confidential, The Hurt Locker, Animal Kingdom, The King’s Speech, and most recently, Mildred Pierce, Guy Pearce has brought many complex characters to life in compelling roles. In his latest movie, the futuristic action thriller Lockout, he turns in another riveting performance as Agent Snow, a cynical, sarcastic guy with a scathing sense of humor who is tasked with the dangerous assignment of rescuing the daughter of the U.S. President when her humanitarian mission is derailed by an intergalactic prison break. We sat down with Pearce at a roundtable interview to talk about what inspired him to play a serious, badass action hero that’s so completely different from his usual roles.  He told us what attracted him to the character of Snow, how he got in shape for the physically demanding role, and why he enjoyed shooting on location in (Read More)

ANIMAL KINGDOM Helmer David Michod's Next Is THE ROVER

Australian director David Michod, clearly, is his own man. And he wants to stay that way. After winning Sundance with his feature debut Animal Kingdom - which picked up an Oscar nom for Jackie Weaver - Hollywood came knocking in a big way with Michod given the chance to take the step out of Australia and into the studio system. And his answer, evidently, is thanks but no. He'd rather keep telling his own stories.Michod's next will be The Rover, a picture he will write and direct from an idea he came up with alongside his Animal Kingdom co-star Joel Edgerton. The story will revolve around a man trying to recover his stolen car, a car which contains something he needs back rather badly....

HKIFF 2012: Day 4 Dim Sum Reviews

I caught a strong, yet eclectic selection of films today, from as far-flung corners of the globe as Australia, Israel and the UK. While the overall quality may have declined as the day wore on, the weakest of the bunch still had a great deal to offer, and the best films were genuine standouts in what has already proved itself to be an incredibly strong line-up. Day 4 (25 March)Wish You Were Here (dir. Kieran Darcy-Smith, Australia)Various assorted cast and crew members from David Michod's Animal Kingdom come together for this fantastic character-based drama about two Australian couples, who head to Cambodia for a hedonistic week of sun, sand and assorted drug-infused debauchery, only to return one man light. As David (Joel Edgerton) and Alice...
