Emily Blunt in Talks to Join Tom Cruise in ALL YOU NEED IS KILL Is a Top Contender for THE THIN MAN Opposite Johnny Depp

Warner Bros. is close to setting a female lead opposite Tom Cruise in the sci-fi thriller All You Need Is Kill.  Emily Blunt is in talks to pair up with Cruise in the film, which centers on a soldier in a war against aliens who finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed.  In the Source Code-ish story, Cruise’s character becomes a better soldier as a result of the time loop, as he’s essentially in an unending series of rounds of Call of Duty multiplayer.  If I’ve learned anything from COD, it’s that lots and lots of practice makes me slightly less sucky.  Hit the jump for more on All You Need Is Kill and the prospects of Blunt teaming up with Johnny Depp. In All You Need Is Kill, Variety reports that Blunt will be playing another soldier who fights alongside Cruise, but no other plot details are given.  Doug Liman (Jumper) is directing the adaptation of the gra (Read More)

F. Gary Gray Straight Outta ‘Captain America 2’ Contention After Signing On to Direct N.W.A. Biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton’

While it was generally always assumed that Marvel would be doing a sequel of their Captain America film after their super hero team-up project The Avengers got out of the way, it was only recently that the film was made official. Marvel Studios announced that they’re looking to give us the second installment of the star-spangled super hero’s adventures come April 4, 2014, and a short list of possible directors who may take on the project included names like Community directors Joe and Anthony Russo, The Adjustment Bureau director George Nolfi, and Law Abiding Citizen director F. Gary Gray. Short as that list is, today a news report from Deadline Watts has made it even shorter. It turns out F. Gary Gray can no longer be considered a front runner to get the Captain America job, because he’s just signed on to make a biopic of the legendary rap group N.W.A. instead. Calling back to one of (Read More)

F. Gary Gray Drops Out of CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 Race Will Likely Direct STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

And then there were two (technically three).  A couple weeks ago, we reported that the frontrunners to direct Captain America 2 were F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo (Community).  Today, Deadline reports that Gray has dropped out of the race to focus on helming the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.  Gray doesn't officially have the Compton job, but Deadline says it's likely he'll get the gig.  No offense to NWA fans, but I'm glad Gray is no longer in the running for Captain America 2.  He was the least interesting of the frontrunners since he's more of a journeyman director.  While Nolfi has only directed one feature film, and the Russos have directed none, they're wild cards, and I don't know what to expect either way. Correction: The Russos previously directed Welcome to Collinwood and You, Me &#3 (Read More)

Is this the shortlist to direct Captain America 2?

Community directors sit on the very short list of possible candidates to direct Marvel’s Captain America 2… The current Marvel slate is pretty well known. After The Avengers , due in the next few weeks, the next film from the studio will be Iron Man 3 , which is set for release next summer. Shane Black is directing that one. After that, its Thor 2, due at the end of 2013, with Game Of Thrones Alan Taylor calling the shots. Then? Well, its widely expected to be Captain America 2, in the summer of 2014 (possibly with an Avengers sequel, although that looks more likely for 2015). However, theres the small matter of whos going to be directing the second Captain America movie, as it looks as though Joe Johnston, who helmed the first, isnt going to get the chance. According to Vulture, the shortlist for Captain America 2 has been whittled down to some interesting na (Read More)
