It lingers intolerably on some inessential scenes, rushes through others, and fails to provide any motivation either for Poe's devoted (albeit fictional) love, or the film's archvillain.

Producers Aaron Ryder and Marc Evans Talk THE RAVEN, CRUSH, THE STRANGERS 2, MUD, and More

Now playing at theaters everywhere is director James McTeigue‘s (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) The Raven. If you’re not familiar with the film, the story takes place in 1840s Baltimore where a series of grisly murders appear to have been inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe (played by John Cusack). The subject matter screams out for cleverness and depth, the sort of mind-bending twists and satisfying darkness that Poe himself would love. It finds them only in small doses.

The Raven scores with its premise. Edgar Allan Poe has had the greatest successes of his career. Now, he writes criticism for the Baltimore paper. When a serial killer strikes using his murderous stories as inspiration, the author could be no better of a choice to aid an investigation into finding the psychopath. John Cusack is Poe and it is clear the star is an appreciator of the writer&#039s work. Cusack is Poe in every sense. He is prone to egotistical-driven rants at various foes who are not up for the verbal challenge. It is pure Cusack. Sometimes a film makes you wonder if Hollywood truly is running out of ideas. Or maybe director James McTeigue just wanted to put John Cusack in period dress and the Sherlock Holmes franchise was already taken. Tone-deaf, The Raven squanders an intriguing idea with dull action set pieces and an unfocused theme. The plot revolves around grisly murders that replicate Edgar Allan Poe’s most horrific works in an attempt to get the not-so-famous Poe to solve the case in Baltimore. Review: ‘The Raven’ Is an Uninspired Waste of a Legend

Sometimes, it’s hard to avoid longing for the good old days, when movies about historic figures were about those historic figures and not the slapdash way they might be jammed into a straightforward genre piece. That’s clearly a passé way of thinking in the age of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but sometimes old-school is the way to go. The life of Edgar Allan Poe was fascinating and mysterious enough to warrant a new movie about it, to be sure. You could call it The Raven and cast John Cusack as your lead.
