Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, "War Horse" begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets-British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter-before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man's Land. Blu-ray Review: WAR HORSE Is A War Movie For The Whole Family

War Horse arrived on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and On-Demand this week. I regret not seeing this flick while it was in theaters, but luckily had the chance to review the disc this week. Steven Spielberg directed this Oscar-nominated Best Picture. This epic flick takes place before, during and after World War I, and tells the story of a horse named Joey and his young trainer Albert (Jeremy Irvine). When they’re forced apart by war, the flick follows Joey’s on his journey as he changes and inspires the lives of everyone he meets. I truly enjoyed this.heartwarming tale of friendship, loyalty, courage, hope and persistence. It is the perfect flick for audiences of all ages, and one that I am proud to add to my collection of favorite flicks that I own. I love the relationship and bond that the horse Joey had with his young trainer Albert. Having grown up seeing flicks like Benji and Be (Read More)

This Week In DVD: Elmo, a Double Shot of Cartoon Network and a War Horse Named Shirley Temple

Welcome back to This Week In DVD! It's a fairly calm release week, but there are a few recognizable titles hitting shelves including Steven Spielberg's cheesy War Horse and the universally acclaimed film about a man famous for sticking his hand inside a felt anus, Being Elmo. Lesser known releases include a couple Cartoon Network shows, Bob Newhart's unfortunate TV swan song, two European imports worth your time and more. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Tyrannosaur Joseph (Peter Mullan) leads a sad, lonely life punctuated with bouts of alcohol-fueled violence, but when he meets a charitable woman named Hannah (Olivia Colman) he discovers his humanity may yet be salvageable. &#8220An animal can only take so much punishment and humiliation before it snaps, fights back,&#8221 he says at one point. &#8220It's just nature.&#8221 Paddy Considine w (Read More)

It is a vividly detailed depiction of a time, a place and a conflict.

The trouble here is not so much that Spielberg's film staunchly insists on finding a happy ending even in the calamity of the First World War, but that he slathers it on so thick and leaves so soft an impression.
