James Van Der Beek and Gattlin Griffith Join Jason Reitman’s LABOR DAY

Coming off of last year’s excellent (and sadly underseen) Young Adult, director Jason Reitman is gearing up to begin production on his next project, Labor Day, this summer.  Reitman scripted the adaptation of Joyce Manard’s novel himself, and Kate Winselt stars as a lonely mother whose 13-year-old son convinces her to take in a drifter (Josh Brolin) who turns out to be an escaped convict.  The three spend Labor Day Weekend together and, obviously, bond.  THR now reports that James Van Der Beek has joined the cast as a police officer investigating a missing person’s case ($10 says he shows up on Winslet’s doorstep at some point in the film). Additionally, a separate report from THR reveals that, following an extensive search, Reitman has settled on Gattlin Griffith (Changeling) to play Winslet’s son in the film.  The deal isn’t closed, but the actor has entered negotiations.  The role i (Read More)

James Van Der Beek & Gattlin Griffith Joining Reitman's 'Labor Day'

Following his award winning work on Up in the Air, filmmaker Jason Reitman was set to move on to two other projects lined up next. One of them was Young Adult, with Charlize Theron released last fall, the other is Labor Day, adapted by Reitman from Joyce Maynard&#039s novel, which it sounds like is finally going into production. THR has a couple of casting updates, one for the child actor lead, the other playing a cop. First, James Van Der Beek, last seen in The Big Bang and "Apartment 23", is joining, along with 13-year-old actor Gattlin Griffith, who played the boy in Eastwood&#039s Changeling, and young Hal in Green Lantern. ››› Continue reading: James Van Der Beek & Gattlin Griffith Joining Reitman&#039s &#039Labor Day&#039

Does ‘Lonesome Jim’ Do Hometown Haughtiness Better Than ‘Young Adult’?

When writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman teamed up on the 2007 film, Juno, the responses were mixed. Some people liked it quite a bit, not just because it was clever and quippy, but also because it presented a realistic, affecting look at the inherent drama of teenage pregnancy. Other people thought that it was painfully self-conscious in its hipness and insufferably annoying in its quirk, so they raged against any praise that came its way. Their next team-up, Young Adult, was different though. Not only did this look at a washed-up YA author traveling back to her home town in order to break up her high school sweetheart’s marriage do well with Juno fans, it did quite well with those who couldn’t stand Cody’s writing up to that point, as well. Charlize Theron’s painfully honest protagonist and Patton Oswalt’s achingly tragic supporting character really hit home for most. On t (Read More)
