Plot: Debbie Reynolds stars as Tammy in this romantic comedy of a country girl living in the South who cares for pilot Peter Brent (Leslie Neilsen) after his plane crashes near her home. At the beckoning of mutual admiration, Peter soon invites her to his plantation where she charms the fancy-shmancy attitude out of his family and transforms the whole place into virtual sweetness and sunshine. Tammy and the Bachelor presented the original song Tammy by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston, which gained the two an Oscar nomination for Best Song and became a hit song for Reynolds. Tammy Tell Me True (1961), Tammy and the Doctor (1963) and Tammy and the Millionaire (1967), as well as a television series, all were spun from this film. ~ Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide

Debbie charms in an evergreen classic!

While Sandra Dee made the character of Tammy one of her most fondly-remembered, it's Debbie Reynolds who truly owns the role.

In the classic original TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR (filmed in 1957 and based on the book "Tammy Out of Time" by Mrs Cid Ricketts Sumner), we first meet Tambrey "Tammy" Tyree, the naivé backwoods gal who falls in love with handsome Peter Brent (Leslie Nielsen) after his plane crashes near the houseboat that she calls home. When her grandfather (Walter Brennan) is arrested for bootlegging, cow-eyed Tammy follows Peter back to his family estate, where her rustic, homespun values get her into a mess of trouble.

The movie is best-known for it's Academy Award-nominated song ("Tammy") written by Jay Livingston, sung over the main titles by the Ames Brothers, and later reprised in the film itself by Debbie Reynolds. The cast also boasts Mildred Natwick, Fay Wray and Mala Powers. The gown that Tammy wears in the Rebel Ball scene (designed by Bill Thomas) is still a popular choice for wedding dresses!

One of Debbie Reynolds' BEST!!!!!!

As a big fan of Debbie Reynolds, I have seen a fair amount of her movies, for what they cost, I would have to say that this is one of my favorites! She is adorable in this movie being so innocent. Tammy, 17 at the time, (Debbie Reynolds) lives on the river with her grandfather(Walter Brennen) and her goat, Nan. Things were lonley for her, until a plane crashed and they rescued a man is his 30's, Peter Brent(Leslie Nielsen). Tammy of course falls in love with him and is heart-broken when he leaves. I forgot to mention that he is also engaged to Barbara(Mala Powers). She is back alone on the river until hergrandfather is arrested and she goes to live with Pete. To know what happens from there on, you'll have to watch it yourself! :) Fay Wray also is Pete's mother.

Definatley worth buying whether you like Debbie Reynolds or not. I also agree that this movie deserves to be out on Wiescreen DVD.

To DVD, please

I have not seen this movie; but like other reviewers, I would like to see it put into DVD format. I am not likely to see it otherwise. I am especially curious to see the 1950s on-location scenery in the movie, if there is any. I will be disappointed if there are only interior shots.

Tammy & the Bachelor

Is Universal waiting for Debbie Reynolds to die before releasing "Tammy & the Bachelor on DVD?" I was in my teens when this movie was released and I loved the simplicity, innocence and purity of love expressed. I vote for widescreen (2:35.1 anamorphic) and 5.1 surround. Come on, Universal! Please!
