Plot: Novelist David Soul returns to his hometown of Salem, finding that things have changed a bit. More than a bit, in fact: the previously warm and friendly community is downright sinister. Soul suspects that the bizarre behavior of his onetime friends and neighbors is the handiwork of oddball antique dealer James Mason. We won't reveal here the secret of Salem; suffice to say that the action goes directly to the jugular, and that makeup artists Jack Young and Ben Lane won an Emmy nomination. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, Salem's Lot was originally telecast in two parts on November 17 and 24, 1979; it was subsequently pared down to a single three-hour installment, which in turn was whittled down to about two hours for cable-TV play. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Blood Curling The Scariest Vampire Movie on the Small Screen
Added 2/6/2010

Rewatched movie in its full entiriety 30 years later and it is just as scary today as it was when I was a little child. Please make sure you buy the full version. There is a Salem's Lot: The Movie which cuts out over 70 minutes of material and leaves the viewer disastified. The movie version even cuts out the beginning and the ending of the film, which is very crucial to the story line. In the full length version, you have more key scenes with the supporting stars including Marie Windsor, Elisa Cook, and etc. The romanatic story line is cut in the movie version between David Soul and Bonnie Bedelia, in a very early role before the snooty mother and sister in the classic "Sordid Lives." The movie version is choppy and incomplete. Don't buy it. Make sure you have the over 370 minutes version. David Soul is very handsome in this film as well. James Mason gives one of his last performances as the vampire's keeper and is very effective. The music is creepy, the vampires are almost too scary. Make sure you don't watch this alone.

Where Is The Blu Ray?
Added 12/30/2009

This made for TV movie is a great adaptation of Stephen King's novel. There hasn't been many. Like Misey, the Shining and the Dead Zone, this adaptation deserves an upgrade and special features. The new DVD/Blu Ray players can get particular about playing these older discs which is now extremely annoying.

Please upgrade with a new transfer and sound.

A classic and scary vampire tale!

First of all I am doing the review of the 1979 movie version. Not the 1979 miniseries version or the 2004 miniseries. Just the 1979 movie. Now both the movie and the 1979 miniseries are the same, just edited differently. I've seen both versions, and although the miniseries version does have some cool added scenes in it, the miniseries is just too damn long with too much padding. At least with the movie version you get a very scary story with out feeling bored at times like you do with the miniseries. The 1979 movie version was the best (this comment does not take the novel into consideration).

"Salem's Lot: The Movie" was brilliantly directed with some great actors and a great story with a very moody atmosphere and some very scary scenes with some very scary vampires. And although the master vampire, Mr. Barlow, is more like Count Orlock from "Nosferatu" than the Barlow from the book, he certainly does make the scariest vampire I've ever seen. Even 1979 miniseries isn't too bad. But the edited movie version is the one to get.

Highly recommended!

BEST OF THE VAMPIRE GENRE
Added 12/15/2009

One of the BEST made for TV movies - EVER!!! I saw this as a young teenager in the 70's...IT SCARED ME SH@TLESS!!! So what if it doesn't stick with the book 100%, this is right up there with the great vampire flicks of all time. Who needs a bunch of posers splashing holy water around and arterial spray every few minutes?!? You don't need it because James Mason is acting his butt off with the rest of the cast!! YOU'LL BE SORRY IF YOU MISS THIS!!! As good as "The Night Stalker" with Darrin McGavin...you have to love the 70's!
This movie is a MUST HAVE for any lover of classic horror!!!

Salem's Lot

The price was right and I really enjoyed this Movie years ago. I was happy to find it, because I thought it might have been out of print. I have always enjoyed Vampire Movies, and David Soul. Great combination! Really good movie. But most important of all, it is based on the Novel by none other then Stephen King. If you really want to watch a really scary Movie about Vampires, then this is your Movie! Enjoy!!
